Techniques are described for providing a method and apparatus for determining source address validation of a data packet in a network in the presence of asymmetric routing. When a data packet is received by a node such as a router, a reverse path forwarding lookup is performed to determine if the data packet was received on a next-hop interface and if the reverse path forwarding fails, a Shortest Path First (SPF) computation at the router advertising the source route will be performed using the link state database to determine whether the data packet arrived from a valid path of the network.

Source address validation for asymmetric routing

The present technology is directed to signaling unreachability of a network device, more specifically, a prefix of the network device in network that utilizes route summarization. A pulse trigger agent can detect an unreachability of at least one Provider Edge (PE) device in a network domain of a network and determine that a route summarization is being used within the network where the unreachability of the at least one PE device is hidden by the route summarization. A pulse distribution agent can transmit a failure message informing other PE devices of the unreachability of the at least one PE device.

Signaling a prefix unreachability in a network utilizing a route summarization

In one embodiment, a method for link state flooding between a network node and a receiving node includes determining a current transmit rate that Link State Protocol Data Units (LSPs) are being transmitted from the network node to the receiving node. The method further includes determining an LSP acknowledgment rate that indicates a rate at which a plurality of LSP acknowledgments are received at the network node from the receiving node. The method further includes determining a new transmit rate based on the current transmit rate and the LSP acknowledgment rate. The method further includes transmitting a plurality of LSPs from the network node to the receiving node using the new transmit rate.

Systems and methods for link state flooding transmitter-based flow control

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for controlling multicast traffic flows through provider edge routers. In some examples, a multicast traffic of one or more multicast traffic flows is received from a multicast source at a first provider edge router of a plurality of provider edge routers. A multicast routing message including a loopback address of the first provider edge router can be originated at the first provider edge router. The multicast routing message can be flooded into a multicast core network for controlling traffic in the one or more multicast flows through the multicast core network to the first provider edge router. Subsequently, multicast joins can be received at the first provider edge router for establishing the one or more multicast flows through the multicast core network based on the multicast routing message including the loopback address of the first provider edge router.

In one embodiment a limited functionality link state protocol node has one or two interfaces configured to send and receive link state protocol packets. In response to receiving, by the partially-participating link state protocol node on a first interface, a particular link state protocol data unit (LSP): sending the particular LSP from a second interface of the partially-participating link state protocol node without updating the local link state database when the second interface is currently participating in the link state protocol distribution; and sending an acknowledgment of the particular LSP from the first interface when the second interface is not currently participating in the link state protocol distribution.

An example method for convergence of multi-destination traffic in a network environment is provided and includes receiving a first type-length-value (TLV) message from a true broadcast root in a Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (TRILL) network, where the first TLV message indicates a first subset of multi-destination trees in the TRILL network, receiving a second TLV message from the true broadcast root indicating a second subset of multi-destination trees in the TRILL network, such that a union of the first subset and the second subset indicates at least one inactive multi-destination tree in the TRILL network, and deleting the inactive tree from a hash table of active trees.

An apparatus for maintaining protocol adjacency state with a forwarding failure is also disclosed.
