Various embodiments of multielectrode radiofrequency (RF) ablation probes are described herein that disclose methods and apparatus for improved control and predictability of the size and shape of RF thermal electrocoagulations. The features of the invention include the ability to make irregularly shaped ablations in order to conform to irregularly shaped target tissue volumes, and to make very large ablations without the requirement for electrode cooling.

Various embodiments are described herein that generally relate to catheter probes for diagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes. The catheter probes described herein generally comprise a proximal hub comprising a hub housing and at least one wire, a catheter body connected to the proximal hub, the catheter body comprising a channel member and an insulator, the channel member being adapted to provide a housing for a portion of the catheter body and a conductive pathway, and the insulator being adapted to cover at least a portion of the channel member; and a catheter distal end comprising at least one electrode connected to the at least one wire.

Advanced multi-purpose catheter probes for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

The present invention relates to an improved method and apparatus for detecting and diagnosing disease states in a living organism by using a plurality of electrical impedance measurements. In particular, the invention provides for an improved electrode array for diagnosing the presence of a disease state in the human breast, and discloses a method of application of the array to the breast that ensures that the multiplicity of impedance measurements obtained from a first body part correspond as precisely and reproducibly as possible to the multiplicity of impedance measurements that are obtained from another, homologous, second body part. A number of diagnostic methods based on homologous electrical difference analysis are disclosed, including the calculation of a number of metrics used to indicate disease states by comparison with pre-established threshold values, and the construction of a number of graphical displays for indicating the location of disease to a body part sector.

Electrical impedance method and apparatus for detecting and diagnosing diseases

A method and apparatus for screening, sensing, or diagnosing disease states by obtaining a plurality of electrical impedance data measurements in organized patterns from two anatomically homologous body regions, one of which may be affected by disease. One subset of the data so obtained is processed and analyzed after structuring the data values as elements of an n.times.n impedance matrix, and deriving from these matrices their eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The matrices and their derivatives are then related by their characteristics to normal or disease states.

Electrical impedance method and apparatus for detecting and diagnosing

A catheter, used e.g. for cardiac ablation, has a handle, a shaft, and a J-bendable distal end containing tip and ring electrodes. The tip electrode is axially rotatable and has insulated and uninsulated portions. As the tip electrode is rotated, the impedance between it and a reference level is observed. When the impedance reaches a maximum, this indicates that the uninsulated portion lies against the tissue and the insulated portion faces the bloodstream. An electrogram can be taken from the electrode, or an ablation current can then be applied to it. Short circuiting of the signal or current through the blood is thus reduced.
