An electromagnetic shielding panel incorporates at least two electroconductive coatings. In two of the panels the coatings are carried on separate sheets of float glass one of the coatings being an anti-abrasive coating is on the outermost surface of the glass in the panel arrangement while the other coating being a relatively soft abrasive-sensitive coating, e.g. silver, is on the innermost of the glass in the panel arrangements. In other panel arrangements the two coatings are located on opposing sides of one glass sheet and in two of the panels a plain sheet of float glass is employed to protect the soft silver coating. In another panel a sheet of glass carrying an anti-abrasive coating is employed. The panels are of the double glazed and the laminated type. This invention utilizes the enhanced capacitive coupling between the two coatings to effectively earth the innermost silver coating by way of the anti-abrasive coating without any direct electrical connection being required to be made to the innermost coating.

Electromagnetic shielding panel

The invention concerns an electromagnetic shielding panel for attenuating electromagnetic radiation typically in the frequency range 20 MHz to 10,000 MHz. In one embodiment of the invention, the panel comprises a laminate of two panes of glass one of which includes an electroconductive coating sandwiched between the two sheets of glass is a plastics interlayer (i) into which is embedded four strips of fine electroconductive mesh which lie along the edge of the laminate and which are in electrical contact with the coating. In another embodiment of the invention, the coated glass includes peripheral bus bars which are in electrical contact with the coating. The mesh and bus bars are arranged to make electrical contact with a metal frame which may be earthed. Alternatively, no direct mechanical contact is made between the frame and the coating and a capacitive coupling (cc) suffices.

This invention relates to translucent electromagnetic shielding panels, that is translucent panels for shielding against electromagnetic interference or eavesdropping, which incorporate silver coatings to attenuate electromagnetic radiation. Such panels may be used, for example, for glazing the windows of buildings, serving as viewing panels in enclosures for housing electronic equipment, for instance, in electronic apparatus rackscubicles, and serving as viewing windows in front of electronic apparatus such as v.d.u.'s (visual display units). The panel of the invention includes at least one pane of glass or plastics and two silver layers each up to 30 nm thick whereby the panel has a lower reflection for visible light than a panel having a single thicker layer of silver having an equivalent electromagnetic shielding effect. The panel may be laminated having an interlayer and has electrical connection means for providing an electrical conductive path from the silver coatings to earth.

An electromagnetic shielding laminate and method of producing such a laminate are disclosed. The laminate comprises a first pane of glass, or plastics, which includes an electro-conductive coating on one face thereof. A plastics interlayer, which is adjacent to the coating, is sandwiched between the first pane of glass and a second pane of glass, or plastics. A border of fine electroconductive mesh is located between the interlayer and the electroconductive coating and the mesh is arranged to be in electrical contact with the coating around the periphery of the coated pane.
