A method of detecting pain in a subject, comprises the steps of generating brain wave data based on brain wave activity of the subject and comparing the brain wave data to reference data to generate result data, the reference data corresponding to at least one of (i) population normative data indicative of brain wave activity of a first plurality of individuals in an absence of pain, (ii) population reference data indicative of brain wave activity of a second plurality of individuals generated in response to pain events inflicted on the second plurality of individuals, (iii) subjective population reference data indicative of brain wave activity of a third plurality of individuals reporting a sensation of pain, and (iv) population of reference data indicative of brain wave activity of a fourth population of individuals following an intervention which has changed a subjective report of pain in combination with determining a presence of pain experienced by the subject as a function of the result data.

System and method for pain detection and computation of a pain quantification index

A device and method for assessment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is described. The device is configured to acquire brain electrical signals from a patient's forehead using one or more neurological electrodes. The acquired brain electrical activity data is subjected to artifact rejection and feature extraction, and a subset of features are then combined in at least one classifier function. The classifier functions statistically place a patient in one of four categories related to the extent of brain dysfunction: 1) normal brain electrical activity; 2) abnormal brain electrical activity consistent with non-structural injury with less severe manifestations of functional brain injury; 3) abnormal brain electrical activity consistent with non-structural injury with more severe manifestations of functional brain injury; and 4) abnormal brain electrical activity consistent with structural brain injury.

Method and device for multimodal neurological evaluation

Method for determining anesthesia dosage includes following steps. First Interventional Agent ('FIA') is administered to Patient at a first rate to achieve First Predetermined Plane of Anesthesia ('FPPA'). Brain waves of Patient are analyzed to formulate First Set of Data (&#x201c;FSD&#x201d;) corresponding to a self-norm during administration of FIA. First transfer function corresponding to patient biochemical reactions to FIA is computed from FSD. Rate of administration of FIA to Patient is altered by a selected amount after achievement of FPPA for first time required for Patient to deviate from FPPA by predetermined degree. An altered amount of FIA required to cause the predetermined deviation is determined as difference between amount of FIA that would have been delivered to Patient during first time at the first rate and an amount delivered to Patient during the first time at the altered rate. Described is a method and system which includes a first set of digital data generated by amplifying and digitizing brain waves of a patient before and after administration of initial doses of interventional agents to the patient and a second set of digital data generated by amplifying and digitizing brain waves of the patient during a medical procedure. In addition, the system includes a microprocessor computing separate trajectories for at least two different indices of an anesthetic state of the patient during the medical procedure as a function of a comparison of the first and second sets of digital data, the indices including a Depth Index (DI), a Memory Index (MI) and Pain Index (PI), the DI corresponding to a depth of anesthesia of the patient, the PI corresponding to a sensitivity of the patient to pain and the MI corresponding to an ability of the patient to form and store memories. A system and method for prediction of cognitive decline, comprises an input receiving input data corresponding to brain activity of an individual and a processor coupled to the input for analyzing the input data to obtain a selected set of features, the processor comparing the selected set of features to at least a portion of entries in a database corresponding to brain activity of a plurality of individuals, wherein entries in the database have been separated into a plurality of categories corresponding to one of a degree of cognitive decline and a propensity for future cognitive decline of individuals relating to the entries, the processor determining, based on the comparison, a category most closely corresponding to the selected set of features.

Described is a system and method which includes the following steps. A plurality of interventional agents are administered to a patient until the patient attains a predetermined plane of anesthesia. Brain waves of the patient are amplified and digitized before and after the administering step to generate a first set of digital data. The brain waves of the patient are amplified and digitized during a medical procedure to generate a second set of digital data. Separate trajectories for at least two different indices of an anesthetic state of the patient are computed during the medical procedure as a function of a comparison of the first and second sets of digital data. The indices include a Depth Index (DI), a Memory Index (MI) and a Pain Index (PI). The DI corresponds to a depth of anesthesia of the patient, the PI corresponds to a sensitivity of the patient to pain and the MI corresponds to an ability of the patient to form and store memories.

A method for monitoring anesthetization of a patient, includes the steps of removably connecting a plurality of electrodes to the scalp of the patient and administering sufficient anesthesia to the patient so that the patient attains a plane of anesthesia selected by an operator. The brain waves of the patient are then amplified and digitized after the patient has been anesthetized, before beginning the medical procedure, to obtain a first set of digital data. The brain waves of the patient are then amplified and digitized during the medical procedure to provide a second set of digital data and the first and second sets of digital data are analyzed in at least one of a time domain and a frequency domain. A system for providing anesthesia to a patient, includes a plurality of electrodes, a first arrangement allowing an operator to administer anesthesia to the patient until the patient has attained a selected plane of anesthesia and a second arrangement coupled to the electrodes for amplifying and digitizing brain waves of the patient after the patient has been anesthetized, before the medical procedure has been begun to obtain a first set of digital data, the second arrangement amplifying and digitizing ongoing brain waves of the patient during the medical procedure to provide a second set of digital data in combination with a third arrangement analyzing the first and second sets of digital data in at least one of a time domain and a frequency domain, a fourth arrangement computing from the data analysis separate trajectories for at least two different indices of a state of the patient during the medical procedure, the indices being selected from a group including a Depth Index (DI), a Memory Index (MI) and a Pain Index (PI), a fifth arrangement providing control signals when any of the trajectories indicates that the patient is deviating from the selected plane of anesthesia and a sixth arrangement automatically adjusting two different anesthetic agents administered to the patient based on the control signal to restore the patient to the selected plane of anesthesia.
