Epoxidized linear block, random, star-branched block or star-branched random polymers are disclosed which prior to epoxidation contain at least one conjugated diene having at least five carbon atoms of the formula (1) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 -R.sup.6 are each hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group, provided that at least one of R.sup.1 -R.sup.6 is a hydrocarbyl group and the structure of the residual double bond in the polymerized diene of formula (1) has the formula (2) ##STR2## wherein R.sup.I, R.sup.II, R.sup.III and R.sup.IV are each hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group, provided that either both R.sup.I and R.sup.II are hydrocarbyl groups or both R.sup.III and R.sup.IV are hydrocarbyl groups; and the remainder of the conjugated diene different from the diene of formula (1), has at least four carbon atoms of the formula (3) ##STR3## wherein R.sup.7 -R.sup.12 are each hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group, provided that the structure of the residual double bond in the polymerized diene of formula (3) has the formula (4) ##STR4## wherein R.sup.a, R.sup.b, R.sup.c and R.sup.d are each hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group, provided that one of R.sup.a or R.sup.b is hydrogen, one of R.sup.c and R.sup.d is hydrogen.

Epoxidized liquid elastomeric copolymers

There is disclosed a linear block copolymer comprising at least one triblock I--B--I, wherein I is a block of at least one polymerized conjugated diene of at least five (5) carbon atoms, such as isoprene, and B is a block of a polymer of at least one conjugated diene, different from that used to polymerize the block I, of at least four (4) carbon atoms, such as 1,3-butadiene. The B block is selectively hydrogenated, while each of the I blocks is unhydrogenated and therefore retains a sufficient amount of its original unsaturation to vulcanize the copolymer. There is also disclosed an alternative linear block copolymer containing at least one triblock of the first polymer block made from a minor proportion of at least one aryl-substituted olefin, such as styrene, and a major proportion of at least one conjugated diene used to polymerize the block I, the second middle polymer block of at least one diene used to polymerize the block B, and the third polymer block which is the same as the first polymer block. In this alternative copolymer, the middle block is also selectively hydrogenated, thereby leaving the terminal polymer blocks with a sufficient amount of their original unsaturation to vulcanize the copolymer. The polymers can be crosslinked or functionalized through the terminal blocks containing the vinyl unsaturation. There are also disclosed random linear and star-branched block and random copolymers made from the same monomers as the linear block copolymers. Also disclosed are methods of producing the polymers and selectively hydrogenating the aforementioned polymerized dienes.

Vulcanizable liquid compositions

Monoalkylated diphenyl oxides are high-temperature stable lubricant fluids having excellent low temperature viscometrics, and excellent additive solubility. These monoalkylated products are obtained by the alkylation of diphenyl oxide using, for example, an olefin alkylating agent, usually in the C.sub.8 to C.sub.18 range, in the presence of an acidic zeolite alkylation catalyst such as USY, which provides the selectivity for the monoalkylated product.

Alkylated diphenyl ether lubricants

There is disclosed a linear block copolymer comprising at least one triblock I-B-I, wherein I is a block of at least one polymerized conjugated diene of at least five (5) carbon atoms, such as isoprene, and B is a block of a polymer of at least one conjugated diene, different from that used to polymerize the block I, of at least four (4) carbon atoms, such as 1,3-butadiene. Alkylated benzothiophenes or dibenzothiophenes are high-temperature stable lubricant fluids having extreme pressure and antiwear properties, additive solubility and inherent EP/antiwear properties. These novel fluids may also be used as additives in other lubricant fluids.

Alkylated benzothiophene-derived lubricants

Monoalkylated benzofuran adducts provide high temperature stable lubricant fluids having not only excellent thermal stability, but good low-temperature properties and excellent additive solubility as well.

Alkylated benzofuran-derived lubricants

Alkylated citric acid derivatives obtained as a reaction product of citric acid and an alkyl alcohol or an amine have been found to be effective antiwear and friction modifying additives for fuels and lubricants.

A combination of Mannich type reaction products of ethoxylated alkylated phenol, and alkylated arylamine possess excellent antioxidant properties. The presence of alkylated phenol in the structure is believed to provide a synergistic antioxidant activity with the aromatic amine. Presence of the alkylated aromatic moiety is believed to provide enhanced lubricant solubility compared to unalkylated diphenylamine type antioxidants. Application of these synergistic mixtures of additives and synthetic base stocks in premium automotive and industrial lubricants will significantly enhance stability and extend service life.

Mannich type compounds as antioxidants

An aromatic functional fluid, specifically a monoalkylated tetradecyl diphenyl oxide synthetic lubricant, contains a polymer-supported reaction product of an organic quaternary ammonium salt, derived from a mercapto-heterocycle and a quaternary ammonium salt. To produce the polymer-supported organic quaternary ammonium salt, the salt is reacted with a dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, specifically 2-dodecen-1-ylsuccinic anhydride. An arylamine antioxidant, such as alkylated phenyl naphthylamine, can be added to the polymer supported organic quaternary ammonium salt-treated functional fluid to impart extra antioxidant and stability properties.

Antioxidants for functional fluids

Block and random straight chain and star-branched liquid copolymers of two different conjugated dienes, the residual ethylenic unsaturation of the polymerized units of one of which, e.g. isoprene, is less readily hydrogenated than that of the other diene, e.g., butadiene. In the case of block copolymers, the terminal blocks of a straight chain copolymer or the blocks of the free ends of the branches of a star-branched copolymer are composed of the less readily hydrogenated diene polymer while the more readily hydrogenated diene polymer is in the form of central blocks of a straight chain copolymer or interior blocks of the branches of a star-branched copolymer. These copolymers may be selectively hydrogenated so that substantially all of the residual ethylenic unsaturation of the more readily hydrogenated polymerized diene units are hydrogenated while enough residual ethylenic unsaturation of the less readily hydrogenated polymerized diene units remains unhydrogenated to provide sufficient sites for subsequent vulcanization or chemical modification. The combination of elastomeric properties and oxidative stability possessed by the polymers of this invention makes them suitable for many and uses such as sealants, caulks and adhesives.
