A quickly adjustable foaming chamber stem for a foam-applying fire-fighting nozzle wherein the fire-fighter can quickly switch from applying on optimum foam to a stream with an optimum throw. The stem is comprised of a deflector plate and a mixing plate that define a foaming chamber there between, the deflector plate having ducts that, when open, communicate a portion of the liquid and foam-stabilizing concentrate into the chamber to form a foam. The foaming chamber, maintained at approximately atmospheric pressure, forms a small homogeneously bubbled maximum foam through liquid from the ducts striking and reflecting from the mixing plate, causing thereby turbulence and agitation. Surface portions of the mixing plate are inclined to maximize agitation.

Adjustable foaming chamber stem for foam-applying nozzle

An apparatus for making foam using a foam concentrate, a liquid and a vapor comprises a primary cylinder defining a mixing chamber therein. An eductor is disposed substantially within the mixing chamber for drawing in foam concentrate while mixing the foam concentrate with a portion of the liquid entering the apparatus. A secondary cylinder defining a foam chamber therein is in flow communication with the primary cylinder at one end via a flow passage therebetween. The eductor extends through the flow passage and into the secondary cylinder thereby defining an annulus in the flow passage to allow a portion of the liquid in the primary cylinder to by-pass the eductor and enter the secondary cylinder. Vapor is drawn into the secondary cylinder to mix with the combined liquid stream from the annulus and the stream from the eductor to create foam in the secondary cylinder. The foam may be directed to a storage tank for fire-fighting.

Foam fire fighting apparatus

The invention involves a mixing apparatus capable of mixing two or more chemicals using a motive liquid. An ejector draws in a first chemical which is directed to the input of an eductor. A second chemical is connected directly to the eductor. The motive liquid provides the motive force for both the ejector and the eductor. By reason of the feeding of the first chemical to the eductor from the separate ejector rather than directly into the eductor, the ratio of the first chemical to the second chemical fed into the eductor is more accurately controlled than if both chemicals were directly fed to the eductor. The chemicals are mixed in the eductor and are discharged as a foam preferably through a foam nozzle.

Foam-generating apparatus

An apparatus for mixing chemicals comprises a motive fluid inlet, a first and second chemical inlet and a chemical outlet. An eductor draws chemicals through the first and second inlets and mixes them with a motive fluid. Restriction devices are provided in each chemical inlet to regulate the ratio of chemicals mixed by the apparatus. The mixture of chemical and motive fluid creates a stabilized foam water solution which is mechanically adjusted by a nozzle producing stabilized foam.

Mixing apparatus

A foam-applying nozzle assembly (N) for applying a foam made up from a supply of a foam-forming liquid composition (F) and a flowing liquid stream (W) includes an inner barrel (I) having an axial bore (10) for communicating the liquid stream (W) from a hose. Eductor means (E) with the inner barrel (I) extracts the foam-forming liquid composition (F) from the supply of the foam-forming composition. The eductor means (E) inducts the extracted foam-forming liquid composition (F) into a portion (W') of the liquid stream (W) flowing through the eductor means (E). The eductor (E) has a discharge opening (22o) in proximity to the outlet of the inner barrel I for mixing the foam-forming composition (F) with the liquid stream (W) from the inner barrel (I) in proximity to the discharge of the liquid stream, whereby a foam is created. Flow regulating nozzle means (R) mounted in an outlet (10o) of the bore (10) regulates the lateral extent of the discharged stream (W).

Foam-applying nozzle

A foam-applying nozzle assembly (N) having adjustable flow rates for applying a foam made up from a supply of a foam-forming liquid composition (F) and a flowing liquid stream (W) includes an inner barrel (I) having an axial bore (10) for communicating the liquid stream (W) from a hose. Eductor means (E) with the inner barrel (I) extracts the foam-forming liquid composition (F) from the supply of the foam-forming composition. The eductor means (E) inducts the extracted foam-forming liquid composition (F) into a first portion (W1) of the liquid stream (W) flowing through the eductor means (E). The eductor (E) has a discharge opening (22o) in proximity to the outlet (10m) of the inner barrel (I) for mixing the foam-forming composition (F) with the liquid stream (W) from the inner barrel (I) in proximity to the discharge of the liquid stream, whereby a foam is created. A deflection plate (32) is mounted inwardly and spaced apart of a mixing plate (12) which is mounted substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (A) of the axial bore of the inner barrel (I). The deflection plate (32 ) is formed having slanting ducts (32a) to communicate a second stream portion (W2) to a mixing chamber 13. Ducts (32a) slant at an angle whereby second stream portion (W2) reflects from the mixing plate (12) to a slanted reflection edge (58) of the inner barrel (I).
