A hollow poppet valve (,) is disclosed, in which a stem portion (,) includes a flared fillet portion (,), having a wall thickness (T), and a downwardly-extending cylindrical portion (,), having a cylindrical external surface (,). In the main embodiment, the valve includes a cap member (,) defining a seat face (,), and a cylindrical internal surface (,), the internal and external surfaces (,) being closely spaced apart, defining an interface having an axial length (L), and being consumed by a weld (,). Preferably, the length (L) of the weld (,) is equal to at least 1.1 times the thickness (T). The fillet portion (,) defines an internal fillet radius (R,), greater than 0.3 times the thickness (T), and near the radius (R,) is a transition region (TR). The present invention improves fatigue strength of the poppet valve by separating the transition region (TR) from the weld (,) so that there is overlap for no more than a minor portion of the weld.

Ultra light engine valve and method of welding cap thereto

A resilient cage (100) is provided for retaining a check-valve (56) in registration with a passageway (54) through an end wall of the static plunger (48) for controlling fluid flow from a first fluid chamber (50) into a second fluid chamber (60). Static plunger (48) includes an annular groove (52) in its outer surface proximate the end wall and cage (100) includes a radially inwardly extending flange (6) that is adapted to extend into groove (52) and secure cage (100) in the manner of an end cap about the end of static plunger (48). Cage (100) also serves to retain static plunger (48) together with a dynamic plunger (28) containing chamber (60) against the force of a spring (64) tending to separate plungers (28 and 48) after assembly.

A hydraulically operated chain or belt tensioner is provided which in a preferred embodiment (500) features a piston or dynamic plunger (56) slidably received within a bore (54) of a housing (52) that includes a fluid chamber (65) that is vented by at least one air vent (76) extending through housing (52) that is oriented relative bore (54) such that tensioner (500) can be rotated a predetermined angular amount alpha relative horizontal with vent (76) maintaining a slope (B) greater than zero enabling entrapped air to escape from chamber (64) and preventing a substantial amount of fluid to drain therefrom by gravity when unpressurized.

Fluid operated chain or belt tensioning device

A fluid pressure device such as a hydraulic pump is provided having an improved inlet porting arrangement to permit a greater output flow rate for a given input speed. The pump is of the type including a housing defining an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber and inner and outer rotors having spaced apart axes of rotation defining a line of eccentricity. The teeth of the rotors interengage to define a plurality of expanding and contracting volume chambers. The housing includes an end face adjacent the rotors at which the inlet chamber defines an inlet port communicating with the expanding volume chambers. The inlet port is generally arcuate and extends circumferentially from approximately the line of eccentricity on one side of the device to the line of eccentricity on the opposite side of the device. Preferably, the inlet port includes a pair of terminal portions of reduced radial width to prevent cross-porting between the inlet port and the outlet port when one of the teeth of the outer rotor is circumferentially aligned with the terminal portion.
