These teachings are applicable for use with an individual who faces problems with respect to forming new long term memories. Generally speaking, pursuant to these various embodiments, one automatically captures () a record of experiential content to which the individual is exposed during a given episode and then automatically associates () that record of experiential content with metadata that characterizes the given episode. This record of experiential content is then automatically used () to re-expose the individual to at least portions of the given episode to thereby encourage development of a long term recollection of at least a portion of the given episode. These teachings will accommodate a variety of experiential content modalities including both audio content and visual content.

Method and apparatus to encourage development of long term recollections of given episodes

Vehicles () are equipped with two-way communication units () that communicate with roadside () and vehicular mounted two-way communication units to receive and/or exchange journey-related information. When approaching a geographic zone that does not support such services, a given vehicle () can receive at least a partial download of journey-related information concerning the second geographic zone () while still proximal to the entry border () for that zone (). The download can be implemented wirelessly, through hard physical contact, or both. The download may also be at least partially concluded while traveling within the second geographic zone () through use of a second non-compatible wireless service such as wireless telephony.

Apparatus and method for downloading journey-related information

Methods are disclosed for sharing location and route information between communication units (e.g., talkgroup members) that are subscribed to a group location sharing service. The group location sharing service is event-based, such that the communication units may form a subset of a talkgroup desiring to actively participate or monitor an event. Communication units de-subscribe from the group location sharing service or talkgroup when they no longer desire to participate or monitor the event. Service levels may be determined for various subscribers to the group location sharing service. The service levels may include, for example, an information transmission service level and information reception service level that determine an amount, type, and/or timing of information to be sent or received by particular subscribers.

Driver preference responsive vehicle route planning system

A vehicle route guidance system considers driver preferences, vehicle parameters such as speed and performance capabilities in a navigation computer, and outputs flexible guidance instructions based on these considerations. The system monitors vehicle parameters such as current location and speed with sensors such as an odometer (,), a compass (,), and a GPS receiver (,). The system also determines the location of a vehicle maneuver and then, considering the former attributes with a model free mechanism, in this case a navigation computer with fuzzy inferencing (,), communicates to the driver instructing him how to manoeuver.

Driver preference responsive vehicle route guidance system

A digitized topology data compression and decompression method provides the digitized topology data of a collection of segments connected to each other via nodes. The method forms at least one composite line representing a chain of connected segments, which reduces an overall number of lines needed to represent the collection of segments and where each composite line has two end points at known coordinates, resulting in compression of the topology data. The method further represents each composite line by its respective end point coordinates. Next, the method enrolls each composite line into one of at least two sets of composite lines for minimizing a number of intersections between each of the composite lines within each of the sets of composite lines. Finally, the method reconstructs the nodes at a decompression time by calculating coordinates of intersecting composite lines belonging to different sets of composite lines.

A method, and corresponding system, of map-matching uses a first trend of position vectors (207, 215, 221, 229, 235, and 245) provided by a first position sensory system, and a second trend of position vectors (203, 211, 217, 225, and 231) provided by a redundant position sensory system. These sensory systems are preferably mounted on a vehicle but also may be a part of a hand held guidance device. The first position sensory system is preferably a GPS receiver (305) based system, and the second position sensory system is preferably a dead-reckoning sensory system, based on a compass (307) and an odometer (309). A reference position vector (205, 213, 219, 227, 233, 239, 243, 246, and 249) is updated based on a matching of either or both of the first and second trends of position vectors to the trend of road segment position vectors based on the map reference. Further, one or more of the non-matching sensory system(s), or an estimated position vector associated with the non-matching sensory system(s), may be corrected influenced based on the updated reference position vector.

Map-matching with competing sensory positions

An improved accuracy sensory system for vehicle navigation employs a sensor, such as a compass (515), or an odometer (509), for sensing a navigation parameter of a vehicle. A signal is provided from the sensor, having an erroneous component. A model free recognizer, such as a fuzzy inferencing navigation computer (501), is employed to recognize this erroneous behavior. After recognition, the sensor can be recalibrated, or assigned a clearness coefficient. The signal is then combined with other measurements of the same parameter and subjected to map matching before deriving the final navigation variable.

The configuration manager then compares these status change notifications with the records in its status monitoring file. If there is a match, the configuration manager sends a message to the requesting process reporting the status change. The status changes that are reported may be limited by the requesting process by specifying a particular status change, a particular resource, or other option.
