A system for reducing data collection burden, comprising: one or more programs including instructions for: receiving a first set of metrics for a plurality of facilities; receiving data associated with the first set of metrics from one or more facilities of the plurality of facilities; determining one or more anomalies in the received data; removing the determined one or more anomalies from the received data; selecting a second set of metrics from the first set of metrics, wherein a number of metrics of the second set is less than a number of metrics of the first set of metrics; and outputting a recommendation applicable to the plurality of facilities based on the second set of metrics.

Systems and methods for reducing data collection burden

Quantitatively identifying and forecasting shifts in a mood of social media users is described. An example method includes categorizing the textual messages generated from the social media users over a selected period of time into a plurality of word categories, with each word category containing a set of words associated with the mood of social media users. A score indicating an intensity of the mood of the social media users is calculated for each word category, wherein a value of the score and its corresponding time point define a data point for the word category. Subsequently, breakpoints in the mood of social media users are determined so that the breakpoints minimize a sum of square errors representing a measurement of a consistency of all data points from inferred values of the scores of the data points derived using the breakpoints over the selected period of time. Further, space of all possible breakpoints for the word categories are searched to identify a defined number and locations of the breakpoints. Finally the breakpoints over the selected period of time are interpreted to identify the shifts in the mood of social media users and trends between breakpoints.

Identifying and forecasting shifts in the mood of social media users

A method determines a threshold for increasing telephone line capacity in a telecommunications system. The method includes receiving a group of parameters that relate to at least one of a telephone line management policy (), environmental parameters (), and cost parameters () and determining the threshold based on the received parameters.

In one aspect, a technique is provided for protecting a data set with a parity set defined by a bipartite graph having a degree distribution that includes no parity symbol having a degree less than three. In another aspect, a parity set defined by an irregular bipartite graph is transmitted along with the data set, and corruptions in the data set are decoded using the data set and the parity set. In another aspect, a particularly useful degree distribution for the parity symbols is defined.

Method and apparatus for protecting data

A system reduces the number of blocked and abandoned calls in a wireless communication system. A cell site receives a call from a wireless station and determines that no available resources exist. In response thereto, the blocked cell site sends a retry message to the wireless station to redirect the call back to the originally blocking face of the cell site.

System and method for redirecting calls to blocked cell sites

A method reduces the number of computer operations required to analyze many performance measurement issues of wireless systems. A multi-dimensional birth-death model is configured to address a performance analysis issue. The method consists of selecting a first group of states from the multi-dimensional birth-death model and determining a relationship between the non-selected states and this first group of states. Thereafter, the probabilities of being in the first group of states are calculated. Once calculated, the probabilities of being in the remaining states can be calculated using the relationship between the non-selected states and the first group of states and the calculated probabilities of the first group of states. The determined probabilities are used to analyze the performance issue.

Fast method for capacity estimation of systems

A method for controlling the admission of a call into a service area. The method includes the steps of selecting a non-negative integer N; selecting a real number p, lying between 0 and 1 inclusive; admitting a call when N&minus;2 or fewer channels are occupied; blocking the call with a probability p when N&minus;1 channels are occupied; and blocking the call when N or more channels are occupied.

Probabilistic use of wireless reserve channels for admission control

A method and apparatus to calculate probabilistic routing parameters to more efficiently route telephone calls from an origin to one of a plurality of call centers. In particular, the rate of calls routed to each gate of each call center is measured for a previous time frame and used to estimate the rate of calls routed to input nodes of a routing network from an origin for a next time frame. Using these estimated rates of calls routed to the input nodes, a quadratic programming technique is used to calculate probabilistic routing parameters. These parameters are modified either automatically or by a network manager to improve the routing efficiency.

Method and apparatus for efficient call routing

A method for remotely detecting at a ground station failed multiplexors and radio transceivers in an airborne telephone system is disclosed. Usage activity of the devices is predicted using a normalized gaussian distribution. A three prong test examines actual usage activity of the multiplexors and radio transceivers which is normalized and compared with that predicted utilizing a chi-square analysis with a specified confidence interval to detect abnormalities in the usage activity.

Method of fault identification for multiplexed devices

A process for scheduling a processor, in a stored program digital switch of a telecommunications network having heterogeneous types of task, utilizes preassigned probability parameters to schedule the tasks for the processor to serve to meet a system objective. For n types of tasks, each having one of n probability parameters P.sub.i where 0&lt;P.sub.i &lt;1, the system first serves a type i task, then if queue i is empty, it serves a type i+1 modulus (n) task. If queue i is not empty, with a probability P.sub.i it serves another type i task and with a probability 1-p.sub.i it serves a type i+1 task modulus (n) until a type i+1 task modulus (n) until a type i+1 task is served. Thus the processor continually cycles through all types of tasks.

Control process for allocating services in communications systems

A wireless communication device using a verification protocol for verifying the identification of the wireless device by a wireless network control station in the presence of eavesdroppers is disclosed. Upon receiving a call request from a wireless device claiming a particular identity, the wireless network control station sends a mask consisting of binary digits in a random order. The wireless device is expected to respond to this mask with a reply that is consistent with both the password contained in the device and the mask. Specifically, the bits of both the password and the mask are 'ANDed' and the result transmitted to the wireless network control station as the reply.

Wireless device for verifying identification

A method for secure exchange of password information between a requester node and a server node using a verification protocol for confirming the identification of the requester node by the server in the presence of eavesdroppers is disclosed. By adjusting the parameters of the protocol the possibility that an intercepter of the exchanges can impersonate a requester node after receiving a specified number of exchanges may be engineered to satisfy security objectives.
