In an example embodiment, a flexible light fixture may be provided. The example embodiment may comprise a reflector panel comprising two substantially parallel opposing outer flanges and a flexible central portion, wherein the distance between the opposing outer flanges may be X. The example embodiment may also comprise a lens with two opposing edges wherein each opposing edge may be configured with an attachment feature configured for attachment to corresponding opposing outer flanges of the reflector panel, and wherein the distance between the opposing edges of the lens may be a distance Y, wherein distance Y may be less than distance X. When the opposing outer flanges of the reflector panel are compressed laterally together a distance that is at least distance Y and engaged by the corresponding lens attachment features, the flexible central portion of the reflector panel may be engaged in a curved compressed state.

An example embodiment of substrate tensioning system is disclosed that may comprise a frame including four sides and channels, wherein the channels may comprise a first surface, a second surface that opposes the first surface, and an edge truss retention feature. The substrate tensioning system may further comprise at least one substrate including four major edges and a first surface, wherein each major edge is configured with one or more edge trusses configured from corresponding folds in the at least one substrate, such that the edge trusses may be configured at an angle relative to the first surface of the substrate. The at least one substrate may attach to the frame, wherein each edge truss may nest inside, and be secured inside a corresponding frame channel, wherein a perimeter edge of each outermost edge truss may be engaged by the corresponding frame channel's edge truss retention feature.

Substrate tensioning systems

A lens apparatus is disclosed that can include at least one piece of optical film comprising two or more major edges, a front light-emitting side, a back light-receiving side and four corner regions, each having one or more associated minor edges defining one or more corner cuts that define a corner cutout. The lens apparatus may also include an edge truss configured on the two or more major edges, wherein each edge truss may be disposed towards the back light-receiving side of the at least one piece of optical film. Each edge truss may include one or more sides configured from a corresponding fold in the at least one piece of optical film, wherein at least one of the one or more sides of each edge truss may be configured to impart support to the lens apparatus and to resist deflection of each edge truss.

Certain example implementations of the disclosed technology include a light emitting device. The light emitting device may include an enclosure with four sides and a top edge surface associated with each of the four sides. The enclosure may be capable of mounting on a grid frame of a suspended ceiling such that a portion of the top edge surfaces contacts a portion of the grid frame. The light emitting device may further include a light modifying element characterized by a substrate with four or more edges, a back surface disposed on the top edge surface of each of the four sides of the enclosure, and a front surface. In certain example embodiments the substrate may further comprise two or more edge trusses. A periphery of the light-emitting front surface may be capable of contacting the grid frame after the light emitting device is mounted to the grid frame.

Light fixtures and multi-plane light modifying elements

A compression lens assembly is disclosed that includes one or more pieces of optical film with a top edge defining an X-axis, a bottom edge, a left edge defining a Y-axis, a right edge at a distance W from the left edge, and a Z-axis perpendicular to the X- and Y-axes. One or more parallel inward and or outward folds extend between the top and bottom edges. The compression lens assembly may include a lens containment feature with top and bottom channels configured to engagingly secure and restrict the corresponding top and bottom edges of the film in at least the Z-axis direction, and left and right channels spaced a distance smaller than W and configured to compress the left and right film edges together and restrict film movement in the X-axis direction. The compressed film piece may form one or more hill or valley profiles between adjacent folds.

Optical film compression lenses, overlays and assemblies

According to one implementation of the disclosed technology, a lens is provided. The lens includes one or more pieces of optical film configured for attaching to and modifying light from a light emitting device. The one or more pieces of optical film define: a lens aperture; a front light-emitting side of the lens; a back light-receiving side of the lens; and two or more edge trusses. The edge trusses are disposed towards the back light-receiving side of the lens. Each of the two or more edge trusses include one or more sides configured from a corresponding fold in the one or more optical films, wherein at least one of the one or more sides of each of the two or more edge trusses is configured at an angle relative to the lens aperture plane to impart support to the lens and to resist deflection of each edge truss.

In an example embodiment, a light fixture is provided that includes an enclosure with an aperture plane and two or more linear light emitting diode (LED) arrays configured to mount within the enclosure on LED array mounting features that are oriented at an angle between about 80 degrees and about 135 degrees relative to a back surface plane of the enclosure. The light fixture may further include a lens with an axis of symmetry defining two opposing lens halves that define substantially planar outer portions and curved inner portions. The two lens halves may be configured to intersect or join in proximity to the axis of symmetry that is disposed parallel, and above or in proximity to the two or more linear LED arrays. The outer edges of the substantially planar outer lens portions are disposed in proximity to opposing edges of the aperture plane of the enclosure.

Certain embodiments of the invention may include system apparatus for providing a light diffusion and condensing fixture. According to an example embodiment, a light fixture is configured for illuminating subjects and it includes an enclosure cavity. The enclosure defines a cavity with an opening and one or more reflective inner surfaces. The light fixture also includes a frame structure defining an optical aperture and the frame structure is disposed proximate to the opening. The light fixture also includes two or more film tensioners associated with the frame structure. The light fixture also includes at least one light source positioned between the one or more reflective surface and a plane defined by the optical aperture. The light fixture further includes at least one optical film comprising at least one lenticular lens surface and the at least one optical film is suspended substantially parallel to the optical aperture by the two or more tensioners.

Light diffusion and condensing fixture

Certain embodiments of the disclosed technology may include systems and apparatus for providing a light reflector, light fixture, light fixture retrofit apparatus, lamp reflector, lamp retrofit apparatus or luminaire reflector retrofit. According to an example embodiment of the disclosed technology, a light reflector is provided that includes two or more nested cone-shaped layers configured for reflecting light from a light source placed in proximity to the inner cone portion. The two or more nested cone-shaped layers include a reflection layer disposed adjacent to an outer cone portion of the layers. The two or more nested cone-shaped layers further include a lenticular optical film disposed between the reflection surface of the reflection layer and an inner cone portion.

Certain embodiments of the invention may include reflector systems, methods, and apparatus for providing a light reflector. According to an example embodiment of the invention, a method is provided for manufacturing a multi-layer light reflector. The method can include attaching a rear reflective layer to a lenticular lens optical film layer. The lenticular lens optical film layer includes a smooth surface and a structured surface. The rear reflective layer is disposed adjacent to or in contact with the smooth surface of the lenticular optical film. The method also includes attaching a diffusion layer to the lenticular lens optical film layer. The diffusion layer includes a smooth film surface and a structured diffusing surface. The smooth film surface of the diffusion film is disposed adjacent to or in contact with the structured surface of the lenticular lens optical film.
