The invention relates to a composite consisting of an impact-modified acrylic capstock or film on a thermoplastic olefin (TPO). A tie-layer containing a functionalized olefin-acrylic is used to improve the adhesion of the acrylic layer to the TPO and to improve the overall melt processing of the three-layer composite.

The invention relates to acrylic alloy compositions that are transparent and have excellent chemical and impact resistance. The acrylic alloy is especially useful in bio-pharmaceutical and medical applications in which the composition needs a resistance to isopropyl alcohol, lipids and impact. The acrylic alloy containing is a melt blend of a high molecular weight acrylic copolymer, polyvinylidene fluoride, optional impact modifier and other additives.

Disclosed is a composite sheeting comprised of polystyrene having a thin protective layer of an acrylic ester polymer and a process for producing the composite sheeting. The process comprises joining a molten stream of each polymeric material in a single extruder discharge conduit such that there is produced a single molten stream having a reasonably well defined interface between the two types of polymeric material, and thereafter, passing the resulting single stream of material through a sheet-form extrusion die having its die lips generally aligned with the foregoing interface.

Decreasing the transmittal of near infra-red radiation through transparent glassy polymers, such as methacrylic ester polymers or those containing a high proportion of N-methyl dimethylglutarimide units, by use of a blended absorber is extremely difficult to accomplish because of the thermal instability of such absorbers under conditions necessary to process the glassy polymer. Use of very low levels of a specific class of thermally stable additives produces a thermally stable polymer blend which may be converted into transparent sheet exhibiting lowered transmittal of near infra-red radiation and useful for many glazing applications.

Glutarimide polymers having an acid and anhydride content lower than the acid and/or anhydride content normally present in the glutarimide polymers. Blends of the reduced acid and anhydride glutarimide polymers with thermoplastic materials are disclosed. A process for altering the properties of imide polymers by reducing or substantially removing acid and anhydride levels normally present in the imide polymer is also disclosed.

Polyglutarimides exhibit improved optical properties, as well as lowered content of non-aqueous volatiles, when the molten polyglutarimide is mixed with water, methanol, ethanol, or mixtures thereof, and the water, methanol, ethanol, or mixtures thereof is removed prior to isolation and processing of the polyglutarimide.

Thermoplastic copolymers of glytaric anhydride and (meth)acrylic esters may be prepared free of acid groups by reacting a (meth)acrylic ester polymer with a secondary amine at elevated temperature, and subsequently removing volatile components from the polymer at elevated temperature and reduced pressure.
