In an apparatus for securing girth binding wires to the sides of an open sided flat container wherein wire manipulations are performed on a wire section secured to a container blank to bend the binding wire ends over the top edge of the sides and drive them into the container blank, first and second crossbars are provided which are respectively vertically reciprocally mounted transverse of the path of travel of the container blank. The first of the crossbars is positioned above the path of the container blank and has mounted thereon a wire manipulating device which cuts the binding wire and bends it downward as the first crossbar is lowered. The second crossbar is positioned below the path of the container blank and has a wire bending and clinching device mounted thereon such that, as the second crossbar is raised, the binding and clinching device engages the previously cut and bent wire ends and wipes them back against the bottom sides of the container blank. As the second crossbar approaches the top of its range, the wire ends are driven into the second side of the container blank.

A device for securing a web handle to a container blank includes a feed station having means for storing a supply of blanks above a conveyor which removes individual blanks from the feed station and carries the blanks therewith, with one edge of the blanks facing in the direction of travel of the conveyor. A web handle supply station is located downstream of the storage station in the direction of travel of the conveyor and includes means for supplying and positioning a web handle of predetermined length to a blank on the conveyor immediately therebelow, with the ends of the web handle located in front of the leading edge of the blank. Means, such as for example a stapling machine, are located downstream of the web supply station for securing the web handle to the container end blank.

In an apparatus for forming loop fasteners on wirebound container blanks wherein wire manipulations are performed on a wire section secured to a container blank to form a loop in the wire and drive the end of the wire into the container blank to perpetuate the loop, first and second crossbars are provided which are respectively vertically reciprocally mounted above and transversely of the path of travel of the container blank with wire manipulating means mounted on the first crossbar including means for bending the wire section into a loop when the first crossbar is in its lowered position and means positioned to be engaged and driven by the second crossbar, during downward movement thereof, for forming a prong in the wire section, after the loop is formed, and driving the prong into the container blank material. The bending means bends the wire over a hook-like extension on a loop bar of the prong forming and driving means, and the latter includes a former bar that engages the end of the wire overlying the hook-like projection and bends it downwardly, in response to downward movement of the second crossbar, to form a prong which is supported on its inside by the hook-like extension and on its other three sides by the walls of a groove in the former bar. A driver bar then drives the formed prong through the face material of the container blank while camming the hook-like extension progressively out of the way.
