An electro-optic device may comprise a first substrate having a first surface and a second surface; a second substrate having a third surface and a fourth surface, the second substrate disposed in a spaced-apart relationship relative to the first substrate such that the second and third surfaces are generally parallel to and face one another; a first electrode associated with the second surface; a second electrode associated with the third surface; a styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) anionic exchange membrane disposed between the first and second electrodes; a first compartment defined by the SEBS anionic exchange membrane and the first substrate; a second compartment defined by the SEBS anionic exchange membrane and the second substrate; a cathodic species disposed in the first compartment; and an anodic species disposed in the second compartment.

Electro-optic devices made with SEBS membranes

An electro-optic device includes a first electrode electrically connecting with power supply circuitry. A second electrode is spaced from the first electrode and electrically connecting with the power supply circuitry. An electro-optic medium is disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. At least one third electrode is disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode and electrically connecting with one of the first electrode and the second electrode via switching circuitry. The switching circuitry is operable to control an electrical current through the first electrode, the electro-optic medium, and the second electrode.

Multi-segment electro-optic apparatus and control methods

An electro-optic element having enhanced durability by the addition of an additive. The additive may enhance the durability of the electro-optic element by reducing or eliminating the effects of water on species with the electro-optic element, such as the electrolyte. Specifically, the additive may operate to reduce or eliminate the formation and/or accumulation of hydrogen fluoride within the electro-optic element by interaction of the electrolyte with water or alcohol molecules. In some embodiments, the additive may be an organosilicon species, such as (3-cyanopropyl) dimethylfluorosilane.

Electro-optic element with additive

An electro-optic element includes a first electroactive compartment including an electroactive film having a first electroactive component and a second electroactive compartment including an electroactive solution or gel having a second electroactive component. An ion selective material is disposed between the first and second electroactive compartments and is configured to inhibit diffusion of the second electroactive component in an activated state from the second electroactive compartment to the first electroactive compartment. At least one of the first and second electroactive components is electrochromic such that the electro-optic element is configured to reversibly attenuate transmittance of light having a wavelength within a predetermined wavelength range when an electrical potential is applied to the electro-optic element.

A low dimerizing electrochromic compound for use in electrochromic mediums and electro-optic elements incorporating said electrochromic mediums is provided. An optical assembly is provided that includes an electro-optic element that is configured to transition between a substantially clear state and a substantially darkened state. The electrochromic device includes a first substantially transparent substrate coupled to a first transparent electrode, a second substrate coupled to a second electrode, and an electrochromic medium. The electrochromic medium includes at least one solvent and/or an electrolyte gel, at least one cathodic material, and at least one anodic material. An electrochromic device includes a flexible plastic substrate including a front surface, and a rear surface, wherein the rear surface comprises a first conductive material; and a rigid plastic substrate including a front surface, and a rear surface, wherein the front surface comprises a second conductive material, wherein the first substrate is joined to the second substrate by a sealing member, wherein the rear surface of the first substrate and the front surface of the second substrate with the sealing member define a chamber therebetween.

Electrochemical devices with plastic substrates

A vehicular rearview assembly is provided that includes a display configured to emit light of a first polarization. A reflective polarizer is positioned adjacent the display. The reflective polarizer is configured to transmit the light of the first polarization and reflect light of a second polarization and an electro-optic element is positioned on an opposite side of the reflective polarizer than the display. The electro-optic element is configured to transition between substantially clear and substantially darkened states. The electro-optic element includes a plurality of electrochromic molecules substantially aligned with the second polarization of the light such that the electro-optic element is configured to substantially absorb the light of the second polarization when in the darkened state.
