A heat exchanger () is provided and in a highly preferred form is an EGR cooler () having first and second passes (A,B) that are connected to an inlet/outlet manifold () by a pair of corresponding thermal expansion joints () to allow differential thermal expansion between the various structural components of the heat exchanger ().

A header construction intended for use in a heat exchanger () employed in a relatively high pressure application includes an array of generally parallel tube runs () with fins () extending between adjacent ones of the tube runs. At least one relatively flat header plate () has a plurality of tube slots () for receiving ends () of the tubes () and a tank () is mounted to and sealed to the header plate (). Peripheral flanges () are located about tube slots () in the headers and a header reinforcing plate () is bonded to the header plate () oppositely of the tank (). Stiffening beads in the form of flanges () are located on the header reinforcing plate () between openings () therein through which the tubes () pass and extend away from the header plate ().

Internally mounted radial flow, high pressure, intercooler for a rotary compressor machine

A compact rotary compressor unit within internal intercooling includes a rotary shaft () with at least one compressor wheel () mounted thereon for rotation therewith. The compressor wheel () has an inlet end () of relatively small diameter and a radial discharge end () of relatively large diameter. A nominally donut-shaped intercooling heat exchanger () is centered about the shaft () to receive compressed air from the compressor wheel and cool the same. Both the compressor wheel () and the heat exchanger () are confined in a housing ().

A rotary compressor machine, such as a combustion air charger, includes a rotatable shaft () having at least one compressor wheel () thereon and disposed within a housing (). A donut-shaped heat exchanger () is located within the housing () between the compressor wheel () and an outlet () from the housing and has radially inner and outer peripheries (). The outer periphery () defines an inlet for the heat exchanger () for gas discharged by the compressor wheel (). The heat exchanger is provided with radially inner and outer flow paths defined by tubes () and includes a combined manifold and tank () which is secured and sealed to a header plate () receiving the tubes (). The combined manifold and tank () includes first, second and third axially spaced walls () with each having a central opening (). The first wall (), at its central opening () is sealed and mounted to a header plate () at its radially outer periphery while the second wall (), at its central opening (), mounts a baffle () that extends axially to and abuts the header plate () to separate the radially inner and outer flow paths. The third wall), at its central opening (), includes an annular, axial extension () sealingly secured to the header plate () at its radially inner periphery.
