Methods for efficiently establishing TLS connections include detecting the proximity of a user relative to a communication device and establishing a TLS connection between the switch and the communication device based on the proximity of the user. An apparatus according to the invention may include one or more proximity sensors coupled to a presence server, which may be coupled to a soft switch. If proximity of a user is detected, such information may be published as part of a user's availability to a presence server. Publication may be accomplished with any device that has network connectivity. The soft switch may gain access to the presence information by subscribing to the presence server. When proximity is detected, such information may be published to the presence server and a TLS connection may be established by a soft switch.

An enterprise private network (EPN) includes a communications server, e.g., a private branch exchange (PBX) managing communications with communications devices located at EPN stations and is connected to a public communications network. A call completion (CC) server connected through a Parlay Gateway to the public communications network manages callback requests from connected communications devices to public communications network stations. Call completion to busy subscriber (CCBS) and call completion on no reply (CCNR) services are thus made available from the EPN to the public network or networks including a mixture of public and private telephones.

When a network fault is detected, a determination is made by a fault analyzer whether or not the detected fault is a reportable fault. If the detected fault is a reportable fault, then an alarm report based upon the reportable fault is generated which is then distributed based upon a distribution list. The distribution list includes only those destination addresses associated with the reportable fault. The alarm report in distributed to any number and kind of communications devices such as, a pager, an email server, and a control console.

Method and apparatus for automatically reporting of faults in a communication network

A virtual private communications network (VPCN) and method of managing calls on the network. Stations on a private communications network are identified by an unique private network identification (ID) code or dial in direct (DID) number. Remote communications devices (e.g., cell phones, analog phones, etc.) are virtual client devices connected from a public communications network to the private communications network. One or more DID numbers are shared DID numbers, dedicated for the virtual client devices. Calls from the virtual client devices may be placed to network stations by dialing shorthand (e.g., 5 or fewer digits) numbers. Each call has a dedicated DID number temporarily assigned to it for placing the call as an in network call. Once the call reaches its final destination, the shared DID number is released for temporary assignment to other virtual client device calls.

Virtual private communications network

A method of transmitting DTMF signals over a compressed computer network ( ) comprises sending a packet containing a compressed DTMF signal followed by a confirmation packet. The confirmation packet preferably comprises an uncompressed DTMF signal which is transmitted on the same logical channel as the packets that represent voice signals. To detect the DTMF signal transmitted, a telephony Internet server ( ) decompresses packets as they are received. If a packet appears to contain a compressed DTMF signal, the telephony Internet server looks for the presence of the confirmation packet before processing the previously received packet as a DTMF signal. In an alternative embodiment, the confirmation packet comprises a code that represents a DTMF signal. The packets that represent the voice signal and the code representing the DTMF signal are sent on separate virtual channels of the same logical channel. At a receiving end, data on one channel is directed by a separation logic block ( ) to a speech decompressor ( ) while another channel is directed to a DTMF signal generator ( ) that generates a DTMF signal when a corresponding code is detected. The outputs of either the speech decompressor or the DTMF signal generator are applied to a receiving telephone ( ).

A telecommunication system includes a private branch exchange ( ) that uses an automatic route selection algorithm to select a trunk on which a call is to be routed. A number of trunk groups are queried for an available trunk and once an available trunk is located, the call is placed. The automatic route selection algorithm monitors the call to determine if an error message or error tone is received. If an error message or error tone is received, a set of remaining trunk groups not previously queried are queried for an available trunk to route the call.

Methods and apparatus are described for facilitating multiple data communications with a first platform (100, 102, and 104) using a single communication conduit (108) having first and second channels. First data are transmitted between the first platform and a second platform (114) via the first and second channels (202). It is determined whether an incoming call comprises second data of a particular type (206). Where the incoming call comprises the second data of the particular type (208), transmission of the first data via the second channel is inhibited (226) thereby enabling reception of the second data by the first platform via the second channel while the first data continue to be transmitted via the first channel. The second data are then received at the first platform via the second channel (230). Transmission of the first data via the first and second channels is resumed in response to termination of transmission of the second data (266).
