Techniques implemented by an IP address management (IPAM) system for monitoring the usage of IP addresses in networks of computing resources and automatically notifying networking devices when IP address usage has changed. The IPAM system may create pools of IP addresses (e.g., address groups), and map those pools to prefix lists that are distributed to the networking devices. The IPAM system may monitor changes in IP address usage by resources in the networks (e.g., allocations and releases of IP addresses), update the pools that are affected by the changes, carry those changes through to the appropriate prefix lists, and propagate updated prefix lists to the networking devices (e.g., firewall devices, routing devices, etc.). In this way, the IPAM system may automatically identify and apply IP address changes to prefix lists that are used for networking operations in the networks.

Monitoring internet protocol address utilization to apply unified network policy

Techniques are disclosed for auditing an IP address prefix that has been assigned to an entity as part of an administrator policy, to determine whether the assignment was implemented on the network. In an embodiment, associations between IP addresses and their assignment are stored in a database. IP addresses are read and semi-authoritative sources (e.g., DNS servers) are queried for information about the IP addresses. Information received in response to the query may be used to validate the IP address (e.g., in a network, all IP addresses used for VM instances will have a corresponding URL in a specific format).

Auditing IP address assignments

Techniques for address migration are described. An address migration service can receive a request to migrate an address space to a provider network, the request including at least one range of addresses. The AMS service can authorize the request with an internet registry and provision the address space in at least one area of the provider network. The AMS can receive a request to advertise the address space, advertise the address space, and allocate at least one address in the address space to at least one resource in the provider network.
