Poly(thioesters), their applications and derivatives

A composition comprising a reaction product of reactants comprising (a) a compound comprising (i) a polysulfide moiety and (ii) an oxygen atom in a &#x3b2;-position to a sulfur link having the formula: where each R is independently selected from H or a Cto Corganyl group, R' is independently selected from a Cto Corganyl group, R&#x2032;&#x2033; is independently selected from H or a Cto Corganyl group, and x has an average of greater than 2, (b) a compound comprising a nucleophilic moiety; and (c) a compound comprising a moiety reactive to active hydrogen.

Polymer compositions and methods of making and using same

The present invention provides poly(thioesters) and monomeric diesters, produced from di(hydroxyethyl)polysulfides and various mono- and di-basic carbonic acids or their anhydrides, and their derivatives. The new compounds combine properties of polyesters and polysulfides. The poly(thioesters) can be used as components in many compositions, including but not limited to adhesives, sealants, caulks, coatings, plastics, paints and elastomers. The monomeric diesters find use in compositions such as solvents and plasticizers.

Compounds and polymers of such compounds are prepared based on the reaction product of a polysulfide containing diol and a dibasic acid, conveniently using an acid catalyst for the reaction. By appropriate choice of mole ratios, the resulting compound may have a hydroxyl and carboxyl, two hydroxyls or two carboxyls as terminal groups. The compounds can be modified by adding augmenting groups to change the terminal groups or properties of the monomer. The polymers find advantageous use as adhesives, sealants, coatings, paints, elastomers, plastic formulations, fibers, films and molded objects.

Poly ((polythioalkyl)esters), their applications and derivatives

An epoxy-amine composition includes an epoxy resin, an amine curative and a latent catalyst. The latent catalyst does not cause the instant acceleration of the reaction between epoxides and amines. In the presence of radiation, the latent catalyst generates an active catalyst that accelerates/initiates the cure process of the epoxy-amine composition.

Radiation initiated epoxy-amine systems

A formulation to produce urethane linkages reacts cyclocarbonate groups with diamines. Aliphatic polyhydroxyl precursor molecules are first epoxidized. The invention does not require complete epoxidation, as it makes use of the un-epoxidized hydroxyl groups of the precursor molecule. These hydroxyl groups are combined with isocyanate groups of prepolymer molecules to form urethane links. The use of prepolymers increases the networking, flexibility, and impact-resistance of the final product. The known formulations for amine hardeners also require complete carbonation of the epoxy groups to form reactive cyclocarbonate groups, which are reacted with diamines to form an amine hardener. In the proposed invention, both cyclocarbonate and epoxy groups are used to combine with the different diamine molecules by making use of the different reactivities of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, and aromatic amine groups. This procedure not only increases the networking in the final polyurethane, it ensures that there are enough reactive amines to form the amine hardener. In addition, the resulting urethane contains hydroxyl groups which impart water-compatibility. The amine hardener can then be combined with any commercial epoxy resin to form a polyurethane that is water-compatible, non-toxic, has a low viscosity, and a high degree of penetrance into a surface, and after curing is impact-resistant, abrasion-resistant, chemical-resistant, strong, and flexible.

An epoxy-amine composition includes an epoxy resin, an amine curing agent and elemental sulfur as a cure accelerator. The degree of acceleration is highly regulated by the concentration of sulfur in the epoxy-amine composition and the time and conditions of the contact between sulfur and the amine curing agent of the epoxy-amine composition.

Polyfunctional polymerizable urethane- or urea-containing oligomers allow the design, adjustment, and regulation of chemical and physical properties of the described oligomers. The invention discloses the formulas and compositions of these oligomers, methods of their synthesis, and methods of converting the described oligomers into useful polymeric products. The described oligomers can be used for many purposes, both directly and in combination with other chemicals in multiple applications such as adhesives, sealants, coatings, composites, etc., as well as in castable and moldable materials.

Polyfunctional urethane- or urea-containing oligomers and polymers prepared therefrom

In a protective coating formulation requiring the use of polyamine molecules, oleic acid is used as a very effective additive to remove any excess polyamines. The carboxyl groups of the oleic acid molecules react with the amine groups of the polyamines to form a harmless amide molecule. The oleic acid thus removes excess pollutants from the final coating. In addition, the oleic acid reduces the viscosity of the coating before curing, making it easier to apply to surfaces, and decreases the curing time necessary. However, the addition of oleic acid does not affect the beneficial characteristics of the coating in any way.

Oleic acid as an additive for a protective coating

A mixture comprising epoxidized liquid rubbers, amine hardeners and sulfur applied to a metal and cured produces a coating that is highly durable and provides strong anticorrosive protection to the metal. The amine hardeners serve to activate and dissolve the sulfur, speed up the curing time, and also bond to the rubbers to create a continuous molecular matrix. The activated sulfur also links the rubber molecules together, as well as anchoring the polymer matrix to the metal substrate via chemical bonds. In a preferred embodiment, the formulation also includes two types of accelerators which act synergistically to further reduce the curing time to less than one hour. The addition of micronized aluminum oxides provides increased uniformity of heating during curing and results in a more uniform coating. The addition of calcium oxide together with the presence of amines and aluminum oxide provides a complete absorption of acidic gases produced during curing. The addition of high molecular butadiene nitrile rubber increases the coatings impact resistance, low-temperature flexibility, and adhesion.
