A device for building-up high pressures, in which the die surfaces facing each other are provided with circular grooves intended to be filled with a solid medium and arranged concentrically to, and beyond, the central sections of the dies. On closing of the dies, these circular grooves form spaces filled with the solid medium.

Device for building-up high pressure

A material consisting of grains varying in size from 0.1 to a few microns intergrown so as to form regular aggregates. The geometric shape of the material is preset by a pattern made from a carbon-bearing non-diamond material and corresponds to the shape of the required finished article. The material can be made in any desired number of identical shapes.

Microcrystalline monolithic carbon material

The proposed compact-grained diamond material consisting of powdered diamond particles is characterized in that the diamond particles therein are coated with a titanium carbide or zirconium carbide film, which film forms a cellular structure over the entire body of the material, and are bound with copper-titanium intermetallides filling the spacing between said diamond particles.

The invention relates to a compact containing crystals of cubic boron nitride and a binder containing at least one of the intermetallic compounds selected from the group consisting of Ti.sub.2 Cu, Ti, Cu, Ti.sub.2 Cu.sub.3, TiCu.sub.3, Zr.sub.2 Cu, ZrCu, Zr.sub.2 Cu.sub.3, and ZrCu.sub.3. A method for the production of this compact comprises the steps of forming a composition including crystals of cubic boron nitride and a binder containing at least one of the intermetallic compounds selected from the group consisting of Ti.sub.2 Cu, TiCu, Ti.sub.2 Cu.sub.3, TiCu.sub.3, Zr.sub.2 Cu, ZrCu, Zr.sub.2 Cu.sub.3, and ZrCu.sub.3, and subjecting the obtained composition of cubic boron nitride and the binder to a pressure within the range of 10 to 50 kilobars and a temperature within the range of 1,000.degree. C. to 1,400.degree. C. The advantage of the present invention consists in providing a simple method for the production of the compact which possesses retained strength and cutting properties. The compact of the invention may be most advantageously used for making cutting and grinding tools intended for machining iron-, nickel-, and cobalt-base steels and alloys.

Cubic boron nitride in a binder and method for its production

A method of producing polycrystalline diamond aggregates, wherein a carbon-containing material is given a required shape, after which, in the presence of a catalyst taken in the form of a powder whose envelope surrounds the carbon-containing material, said material is subjected to the action of pressure and simultaneous heating by an electric current pulse with a duration of 0.1 to 10.0 sec.

Method of producing polycrystalline diamond aggregates

A process for producing synthetic diamonds which comprises the synthesis of diamonds from a charge consisting of graphite or a carbonaceous material capable of being graphitized and a catalyst; as the latter use is made of a metalgraphite laminar compound of a transition metal, wherein said metal is interposed between the graphite layers and chemically bonded therewith. Said catalyst makes it possible to shorten the duration of the synthesis down to several seconds and carry-out the synthesis at a temperature of below 1,200.degree. C. The resulting diamond crystals are colorless and transparent.

Process for producing synthetic diamonds

A method of producing polycrystalline diamonds which is characterized by providing a thermal contact of the reaction chamber with the cooled members of the device developing a high pressure and high temperatures for removing the heat generated within this chamber in the process of crystallization of a diamond, which method is also characterized in that the cross-sectional area of the metal-catalyst is not more than 0.04 that of the reaction chamber in a plane normal to the direction of the maximum withdrawal of the heat of crystallization. Said metal-catalyst is set in the carbon-containing material substantially in the center of the reaction chamber.

Method of producing polycrystalline diamonds

A workpiece made of a non-diamond carbonaceous material and having dimensions exceeding those of a polycrystalline diamond aggregate by a contraction coefficient value of the non-diamond material during its transformation into a polycrystalline diamond material, is enclosed with a powder-like catalyst having particle dimensions less than the minimum dimensions of the workpiece, subjected to a pressure of at least 80 kb, and heated by a pulse of electric current for a period of 0.1 to 10 seconds sufficient for the formation of said polycrystalline aggregate.
