An release handle mechanism for a motor vehicle trunk lid is provided. The release handle mechanism includes a handle, that when activated can release the latch that couples the trunk lid to the vehicle body. The mechanism includes a housing having a plurality of sides. One side includes an inclined surface onto which the handle is pivotally connected such that the pivoting of the handle causes the handle to move outward and downward. The mechanism also includes a light source disposed within one side of the housing. The light source is disposed less than 4 inches away from the handle and is capable of directing light towards said handle as well as the trunk. The handle itself is comprised of a generally cylindrical horizontal portion and a pivot portion that is connected to the inclined surface. In the first embodiment the handle is comprised of a thermoplastic polymer resin, containing a phosphorescent, while in the second embodiment, the housing is made of material with the phosphorescent additive. A method for providing an illuminated handle in a vehicle trunk is also provided in the present invention.

Trunk release handle

An automobile interior component having sound-dampening characteristics has a contact area thereon which contacts a second interior plastic component during operation of the automobile resulting in noise. The interior plastic component has a thermoplastic elastomer self-adhered to the contact area to thereby dampen the noise created at the contact area. A method for making a sound-dampened interior plastic component includes extruding a body of thermoplastic elastomer through a die onto a contact area of an interior plastic automobile component and allowing the extruded body of thermoplastic elastomer to cool, solidify, and adhere to the interior plastic component.

Sound-dampened automobile interior components and methods for making same

A device and method for monitoring a vehicle storage compartment for the presence of a confined individual includes at least one sensor adapted for sensing the presence of a living being confined in a vehicle storage compartment and generating a sensor signal in response thereto and a controller coupled to the at least one sensor and generating an actuation signal in response to the sensor signal. The actuation signal may be used to automatically open the vehicle storage compartment and/or to cause an audible warning device coupled to the controller to produce a predetermined warning in response to the actuation signal. The actuation signal may also be used to produce a visual signal which draws attention to the vehicle.

Trunk monitoring system

A method of molding a component such as a headliner or sun visor for the interior of automotive vehicles is molded from different thermoplastic materials from the same family that can be subsequently recycled as a whole without the need of separation into its constituents. The interior component is a multi layer composite of polyester (PET) finishing fabric, a resilient layer of bicomponent polyester fiber padding composed of blend of a low melting point fibers and high melting point fibers, and a relatively stiff core layer of polyester/glass fiber composite of polyester and glass fibers. The different fibers of the core layer are blended into a thin and porous sheet which is cut to size. The cut sheets are consolidated and molded under heat and pressure into a light weight, dense and structurally strong composite. A mold charge comprises the polyester/glass fiber composite layered with the bicomponent. The charge is heated in an oven and transferred to an open mold having the polyester finishing fabric facing therein. The mold is dosed and pressure is applied to complete formation of the headliner or sun visor component.

Method of molding a recyclable multi-layer component from plastics

A composite finishing cover for a component such as a vehicle instrument panel is provided by extruding a parison of inner and outer layers of different recyclable plastics having different characteristics but which are from the same family of plastics. The parison is injected with low pressure gas when forming dies are being closed thereover so that the plastics will fully conform to the forming surfaces of the die tooling cavity. The closing force of the dies cause the heat softened inner layers of the first plastics material to join at their interface to form a relatively thick core or substrate providing structural support for the relatively thin and flexible outer layer of the cover, also joined at their interface. The outer layer provides a finishing surface that exhibits a soft feel as when the human hand lightly contacts and moves across the surface thereof. Importantly, in this invention the finishing cover can be readily recycled as a unit without the necessity of separating the different plastics layers from one another since they are from the same family.

Soft touch cover and method of manufacture

A component such as a headliner or sun visor for the interior of automotive vehicles is molded from different thermoplastic materials from the same family that can be subsequently recycled as a whole without the need of separation into its constituents. An instrument panel top cover with a seamless break-away air bag door made as a unitary composite from multiple layers of plastics by extruding a parison with inner and outer layers of different recyclable plastics having different physical characteristics but which are from the same plastics family. The parison is injected and expanded with low pressure gas and forming dies with door scoring tools are closed thereover. The plastics will resultantly conform to the shaping surfaces of the dies to form the composite while the perimeter of the air bag door is scored. A quantity of the plastic material interior of the door score lines is removed after the top cover is removed from the dies so that a seamless or hidden door is provided that can readily break open at the peripheral scores to augment air bag operation when the air bag is triggered.

A seal and fastener isolator system for a thermoplastic valve cover that has the seal made of a silicone rubber and is integrally formed with the fastener isolator so as to allow the entire assembly to be manufactured in one molding operation.
