A thermodynamic system containing a working fluid is disclosed. The thermodynamic system comprises at least a working fluid collection vessel () adapted to contain a liquid phase and a gaseous phase of the working fluid in thermodynamic equilibrium. A chilling arrangement () is functionally coupled to the fluid collection vessel () and adapted to remove heat from the working fluid collected in the working fluid collection vessel () and thereby reduce pressure in said thermodynamic system. Also disclosed are methods for depressurizing a thermodynamic system containing a working fluid in liquid/gas equilibrium.

Thermodynamic system containing a fluid, and method for reducing pressure therein

A method for operating start-up of a compressor train is disclosed. The train includes a driver machine and at least a centrifugal compressor drivingly coupled to the driver machine. The centrifugal compressor in turn includes a plurality of compressor stages and at least a first set of variable inlet guide vanes at an inlet of one of the compressor stages. The method includes at least partly closing the first set of variable inlet guide vanes; when the first set of variable inlet guide vanes is at least partly closed, starting rotation of the centrifugal compressor and accelerating the centrifugal compressor up to a minimum operating speed; opening the at least one set of variable inlet guide vanes to increase the gas flow through the centrifugal compressor once the minimum operating speed has been achieved.

The method is used for uniforming temperature in a shaft supported by a fluid bearing during rotation of the shaft; a journal portion of the shaft is located inside the fluid bearing; at least one passage is provided inside the shaft at least along the journal portion so to cross it; at least one flow of heat-exchange fluid is established in the at least one passage; the method allows to overcome the problems due to the 'Morton effect'. A bearing system implementing the method is advantageously used in a turbomachine.

A dry gas seal for sealing the shaft of a turbomachinery, provided with means for the continuous health monitoring of the dry gas seal comprising one or more sensors adapted to measure strains and/or loads induced to the primary ring of the dry gas seal and/or strains induced to one or more of the elastic elements coupled to the primary ring and/or adapted to measure displacements of the primary ring or of an element coupled to the primary ring, for an early detection of failure of the seal, thus enabling main failures early detection capability and proactive maintenance actions.

Dry gas seal

The shaft seal arrangement for a rotating turbomachine shaft having a rotation axis, comprises a rotor part and a stationary part. A dry gas seal is further provided, in combination with a cooling fluid volume arranged for receiving a cooling fluid and in heat exchange relationship with the dry gas seal. A venting arrangement collectively vents exhaust cooling fluid and dry sealing gas from the shaft seal arrangement.

A method for operating a rotating machinery comprising a rotor, a rotor shaft, and at least one journal bearing supporting the rotor shaft is disclosed. The bearing comprises a bearing housing, a bearing surface in the bearing housing, a sleeve torsionally and axially fitted on the shaft, and a lubrication oil film filling a clearance between the outer surface of the sleeve and the bearing surface. The method comprises the step of modifying the clearance by modifying a radial dimension of the outer surface of the sleeve as a function of a rotation speed of the shaft.

Methods, devices and systems capable of performing a hot restart of a compressor driven by a turbine are provided. The turbine has a high speed shaft and a low speed shaft connected to the compressor. A base slow roll speed at which a speed of the low speed shaft is in a slow roll range is maintained at the high speed shaft for a predetermined time. Then, when a vibration amplitude of the compressor is larger than a vibration limit, the maintaining is repeated. Otherwise, a set speed of the high speed shaft is increased, until a current speed of the low speed shaft reaches a minimum operating speed. If, while increasing the set speed, the vibration amplitude becomes larger than the vibration limit, the maintaining is repeated.

An axial thrust balancing system for a centrifugal compressor, having improved safety characteristics, the centrifugal compressor comprising a rotor having impellers adjacent to each other and connected by a shaft, the rotor rotating in a stator, the centrifugal compressor additionally including a balancing piston, a balancing line being provided between an intake of a first compression stage and an area downstream of the balancing piston; this system comprises an intake mechanical gas seal around the shaft upstream of the first compression stage and an outlet mechanical gas seal downstream of the balancing piston, the balancing line being closable by blocking elements.
