A pair of multifocal contact lenses for a patient comprises a first corneal contact lens having a concave posterior surface and a convex anterior surface. The anterior surface is formed with a power curve having exactly two vision correction zones, namely, a circular distance vision correction zone and an annular intermediate vision correction zone contiguous with the distance vision correction zone. The intermediate vision correction zone of the first lens is concentric or coaxial with the distance vision correction zone. A second corneal contact lens of the pair also has a concave posterior surface and a convex anterior surface. The anterior surface of the second lens is formed with a power curve having exactly two vision correction zones: a circular near vision correction zone and an annular intermediate vision correction zone contiguous with the near vision correction zone. The intermediate vision correction zone of the second lens is concentric or coaxial with the near vision correction zone. The intermediate vision correction zone of the first lens and the distance vision correction zone have optical powers differing in magnitude by less than approximately 1.5 diopters. Similarly, the intermediate vision correction zone of the second lens and the near vision correction zone have optical powers differing in magnitude by less than approximately 1.5 diopters.

Multifocal corneal contact lens

A pair of multifocal contact lenses customized for a patient. A first corneal contact lens and a second corneal contact lens each have an anterior side with a power curve defined in part by (i) a central surface, (ii) an inner annular surface contiguous with the central surface, (iii) a second annular surface contiguous along a radially inner periphery with the inner annular surface, and, optionally, (iv) an outer annular surface contiguous along a radially inner periphery with the second annular surface. Each of the annular surfaces is concentric or coaxial with the central surface. The central surface corresponds to a distance vision correction zone, the second annular surface to a near vision correction zone, and the outer annular surface to a distant vision correction zone. The inner annular surface of the first corneal contact lens corresponds to a long intermediate vision correction zone, while the inner annular surface of the second corneal contact lens corresponds to a short intermediate vision correction zone. To that end, the inner annular surface of the first corneal contact lens and the inner annular surface of the second corneal contact lens have substantially different optical powers.

Multifocal corneal contact lens pair

A pair of multifocal contact lenses for a patient comprises a first corneal contact lens having a concave posterior surface and a convex anterior surface. The anterior surface is formed with a power curve including a circular intermediate vision correction zone and an annular distance vision correction zone contiguous with the intermediate vision correction zone. The distance vision correction zone is concentric or coaxial with the intermediate vision correction zone. A second corneal contact lens of the pair also a concave posterior surface and a convex anterior surface. The anterior surface of the second lens is formed with a power curve including a circular intermediate vision correction zone and an annular near vision correction zone contiguous with the respective intermediate vision correction zone. The near vision correction zone is concentric or coaxial with the intermediate vision correction zone of the second lens. The intermediate vision correction zone of the first lens and the distance vision correction zone have optical powers differing in magnitude by less than approximately 1.5 diopters. Similarly, the intermediate vision correction zone of the second lens and the near vision correction zone have optical powers differing in magnitude by less than approximately 1.5 diopters.

Multifocal corneal contact lenses

A multifocal contact lens customized for a patient has an anterior side with a power curve defined in part by (i) a central spheric aspheric surface, (ii) an inner annular spheric surface contiguous with the central aspheric surface, (iii) a second annular spheric surface contiguous along a radially inner periphery with the inner annular spheric surface, and (iv) an outer annular spheric surface contiguous along a radially inner periphery with the second annular spheric surface. Each of the annular spheric surfaces is concentric or coaxial with the central aspheric surface. The central aspheric surface corresponds to a distance vision correction zone. The inner annular spheric surface is an spheric surface corresponding to an intermediate vision correction zone. The second annular spheric surface corresponds to a near vision correction zone, and the outer annular spheric surface corresponds to a distant vision correction zone.

Multifocal contact lens

A multifocal contact lens customized for a patient has, in accordance with the present invention, an anterior side with a power curve defined in part by a (i) central aspheric surface, (ii) an inner annular surface contiguous with the central aspheric surface, (iii) a second annular surface contiguous along a radially inner periphery with the inner annular aspheric surface, and (iv) an outer annular surface contiguous along a radially inner periphery with the second annular aspheric surface. Each of the annular surfaces is concentric or coaxial with the central aspheric surface. The central aspheric surface corresponds to a distance vision correction zone. The inner annular surface is an aspheric surface corresponding to a progressive add zone with a standard eccentricity between approximately -1.5 and approximately -5.0. The second annular surface corresponds to a near vision correction zone, and the outer annular surface corresponds to a distant vision correction zone.

A hydrophilic multifocal contact lens customized for a patient comprises, in accordance with the present invention, (i) an anterior surface having at least two annular aspheric surfaces, each of said annular aspheric surfaces having standard eccentricity values ranging from about 0.4 to about 1.8, said surfaces differing in eccentricity value from about 0.2 to about 0.8, (ii) a concave posterior cornea-fitting surface having at least one spherical or aspheric surface, and optionally, (iii) an edge radius at the annular periphery of said posterior surface.

Multifocal contact lens and method for preparing

A multifocal contact lens customized for a patient includes a central portion having a concave aspherical posterior surface of a standardized eccentricity and an annular portion connected to the central portion. The central portion also has a convex anterior surface with a power curve customized to the patient. The annular portion is provided with an aspheric annular cornea-fitting posterior surface and has an outer edge with a centralized apex, whereby the annular portion may be formed at the outer edge to be entrainable by a patient's eyelid to shift the lens relative to the patient's eye to vary which portion of the power curve is used during vision. The contact lenses according to the invention may be rigid or soft (hydrogels).

Multipocal contact lens and method for preparing

A method for use in preparing a customized multifocal contact lens includes the step of providing a standard diagnostic contact lens having an annular portion with a concave cornea-fitting posterior surface and a central portion with a predetermined convex anterior surface and a concave aspherical posterior surface of predetermined eccentricity. The diagnostic contact lens is placed on the cornea of a patient's eye so that the fitting surface is in substantial contact with the cornea. The diagnostic contact lens is allowed to align itself with the cornea in an off-center position. Upon an alignment of the diagnostic contact lens in the off-center position, two or more test lenses are disposed in series before the patient's eye to determine a power curve with which the anterior surface of the central portion could be formed to provide optimal near and far vision for the patient.

The present invention relates to novel copolymers and contact lenses made from these copolymers comprising preformed silicon-containing acrylic star polymers and macromonomers, preparation of these contact lenses and a therapeutic method for treating patients with visual impairment. Described is a copolymer comprising at least about 10% by weight of a preformed silicone-containing acrylic copolymer and no more than about 90% by weight of a matrix formed from the random polymerization of a mixture of monomers. The mixture of monomers comprises at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of silicone acrylates, esters of alpha, beta-unsaturated acids and wetting monomers. The preformed silicone-containing acrylic copolymer is preferably copolymerized throughout the matrix. The copolymer is readily machined into gas permeable contact lenses exhibiting substantially enhanced characteristics of at least one of the characteristic group of oxygen permeability, hardness and machineability relative to contact lenses formed from the random polymerization of monomers.

Silicone-containing contact lens polymers, oxygen permeable contact

The present invention relates to novel copolymers and contact lenses made from these copolymers comprising preformed silicone-containing acrylic star polymers, graft copolymers and macromonomers, preparation of these contact lenses and a therapeutic method for treating patients with visual impairment. Described is a composition comprising at least about 10% by weight of a preformed silicone-containing acrylic copolymer and no more than about 90% by weight of a matrix formed from the random polymerization of a mixture of monomers. The mixture of monomers comprises at least one hydrophilic monomer and optionally, monomers selected from the group consisting of silicone acrylates, esters of alpha, beta-unsaturated acids and crosslinking monomers. The preformed silicone-containing acrylic copolymer is preferably copolymerized throughout the matrix. The final compositions are hydrated to a final water content of at least about 10% by weight.

Silicone-containing polymers, oxygen permeable hydrophilic contact

In monovision type corneal contact lenses, one or both lenses is provided with one or more auxiliary correction zones each having a focal length different from the focal length of the major portion of the respective lenses. In any lens in accordance with the invention, the portion of the principal correction zones coextensive with the pupil of the respective eye covers more than approximately two-thirds (more preferably seventy-five percent and most preferably eighty percent) of the area of the pupil. This upper limit on the pupil area covered by the auxiliary zones is satisfied regardless of the disposition of the respective contact lens on the eye and regardless of the size of the respective pupil.

Monovision corneal contact lenses

In multifocal corneal contact lenses, the lenses of each pair have a different geometric configuration and/or distribution of focal zones. The zones are distributed to provide vision corrections of different kinds for the two eyes of a patient under different illumination conditions.
