A servo motor system including a position sensor located within the motor air gap to virtually eliminate mechanical compliance in the servo loop. The transducer is of a capacitive type including interleaved capacitive plates and is designed to be substantially insensitive to the magnetic field of the motor.

Capacitive sensor motor control system

A linear servo system including a linear motor with a moving permanent magnet the flux of which interacts with current flow through a stator winding. A position servo loop controls the position of the permanent magnet and preferably includes a position transducer located within the motor air gap. The servo system when used in combination with a disk drive preferably includes a coarse/fine positioning program to first move to the desired disk track area and to then move to the center of the disk track. The motor winding located in the air gap can be made of iron or copper clad iron to reduce the size of the effective air gap.

Linear positioning system

A bearing structure for use in a linear motor or actuator including only a single guide rod in combination with a freely moving ball bearing. When used in a permanent magnet motor, the magnetic flux of the motor is used to preload the ball bearing to maintain a relatively constant bearing loading and to maintain the ball bearing in position.

A dynamoelectric machine, of the direct current type, with a circumferentially segmented stationary magnetic field structure providing magnetic poles including diametrically opposed pairs of north and south poles, with intervening poles of alternating polarity; rotor conductors extending longitudinally and selectively interconnected in sets providing a plurality of series current paths each traversing a plurality of stator active pole regions; and a pair of brushes for current collection at one or both machine ends.

A homopolar dynamoelectric machine is provided in which the magnetic fields are segmented circumferentially of the machine. Longitudinal field windings are placed in recesses in a cylindrical stator and energized so as to provide radial magnetic fields in polar regions between the field windings. Stator conductors are placed in slots in the polar regions. The rotor carries longitudinal conductors on its surface positioned to cut the radial magnetic fluxes, and current-collecting means are provided at both ends of the machine to make electrical contact with both ends of the rotor conductors. The current-collecting means are connected to the stator conductors to complete the electrical circuit of the machine.
