The present invention relates to fire retardant polymer compositions possessing a non-liner structural configuration resulting by the reaction of N-tribromo-phenylmaleimide, with or without comonomer, with a preformed backbone polymer, in which the bromine content is above 1.2% by weight bromine. The polymer is selected from polystyrene, polyolefins, polyamides, rubbers, polyesters, acrylics, polymeric dienes and mixtures or copolymers thereof. The comonomer present with the N-tribromophenyl-maleimide is selected from the group consisting of acrylonitrile, styrene and vinyl chloride. According to the invention the non-linear structural configurations are obtained either by grafting or crosslinking of the N-tribromophenylmaleimide onto the preformed backbone polymer in the presence of free radical producing means. Optionally, synergistic fire retardant additives such as antimony oxide are incorporated in the compositions. The preformed backbone polymer must be no less than 4% by weight of the total resin present in the compositions. The flame retardant polymer compositions have improved properties compared with those obtained with known flame retardant reagents.

A process for preparing lower alkyl-halides from the reaction of HX and the corresponding lower alcohol, wherein X represents a halogen atom, comprises continuously feeding HX and a lower alcohol to a reactor maintaining the instantaneous molar ratio of HX to the alcohol greater than 3, and continuously distilling off lower alkyl-halide and water from the reactor, continuously separating the lower alkyl-halide and water and recycling part of the said water to the distillation column to abate HX distillation from the reactor. High acid concentration and temperatures are maintained to obtain high yields and rapid conversion of alkanols.

Stabilized antimicrobial compositions containing an antimicrobial amount of 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide in water miscible organic solvents. The stabilizer used is selected from chain-breaking antioxidants of the phenolic or amine type in an amount in the range of 0.001% to 0.5% by weight of the composition. Typical examples of stabilizers are: 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol; 4,4'-bis-(2,6-di-tert-butylphenol); 2,6-di-tert-butyl-.alpha.-methoxy-p-cresol and N-phenyl-.beta.-naphthylamine. The antimicrobial compositions also contain one or more water miscible organic solvents selected from those known in the art, in which the 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide is at least partially soluble. The compositions according to the present invention are characterized by their outstanding stability, compared with formulations which do not contain these stabilizers.
