A continuously moving lathe knife is provided which can be retrofit to an existing lathe carriage. The knife assembly includes a chain bar secured to the knife carriage with a pair of sprockets at either end of the chain bar. An endless loop chain extends around the sprockets. The chain includes knife tips with angularly disposed serrations which engage the surface of the log from which veneer is being cut. As the log is rotated about its longitudinal axis, the friction between the log and knife tip serrations imparts longitudinal movement of the chain with respect to the log. The chain thereby moves around the chain bar so as to cut a layer of veneer from the log. No separate power source is required for rotating the chain.

Continuously moving lathe knife

A continuously moving lathe knife is provided which can be retrofit to an existing lathe carriage. The knife assembly includes a chain bar secured to the knife carriage with a pair of sprockets at either end of the chain bar. An endless loop chain extends around the sprockets. A power source rotates one of the sprockets so as to rotate the chain around the sprockets. The movement of the chain is guided by a channel in the chain bar. Each link of the chain includes a knife tip for cutting a layer of veneer from a wooden log which is rotated about its longitudinal axis as the chain is rotated in a plane parallel to the log surface.

A large diameter nose bar roll apparatus for a veneer lathe is disclosed including an automatic knife gap adjustment means. The knife gap adjustment means reduces the knife gap between the nose bar roll and the knife blade during peeling in response to decreases in the log diameter and/or changes in the knife pitch angle. This knife gap adjustment maintains the nose bar roll in contact with the log at the proper contact pressure as the diameter of the log decreases during peeling. This is necessary for nose bar rolls having a large diameter of at least 1.5 inches and 15 times the thickness of the veneer such as, for example, a nose bar roll of 3.75 inches diameter. An electrical control means is employed for automatically controlling the knife gap adjustment means by moving the nose bar roll toward the knife in response to decreases in the log diameter and changes in the pitch angle. The nose bar roll may be driven by power means to apply an auxiliary driving force for rotating the log in addition to the powered spindles provided at the opposite ends thereof for rotating such log during peeling.

Large diameter nose bar roll apparatus for veneer lathe with automatic

A veneer lathe apparatus is described with a powered nose bar roll of large diameter that is capable of peeling logs down to an extremely small core diameter on the order of about 21/2 inches for soft wood. The large diameter nose bar roll prevents jam-up of wood chips and trash at the junction between such roll and the log and greatly increases cutting time between lathe knife sharpenings. Both ends of the nose bar roll are connected through flexible couplings of plastic to the output shafts of two separate drive motors. The nose bar roll may be provided with a grooved outer surface for greater friction and can apply up to 40 percent of the total torque required for rotation of the log and to pressure the log for compression of its surface in front of the lathe knife during peeling. The nose bar roll is of larger diameter than the minimum log core and preferably such diameter is at least fifteen times the thickness of the wood veneer being peeled. For example, a nose bar roll diameter of 33/4 inches has been found suitable for peeling veneers in the thickness range of 0.1 and 0.2 inches. A plurality of open bearings are spaced along the length of the nose bar roll for supporting such nose bar and lubrication means is provided for such bearings by means of a plurality of oil passages which transmit oil through the bearing sleeves by air pressure to the inner surface of the bearing sleeve.

Veneer lathe with powered nose bar roll of large diameter

A veneer lathe apparatus is described including three powered drive rolls between which a log is clamped for rotation about a lathe axis while the log is engaged by the lathe knife for peeling a sheet of veneer therefrom. One of the powered rolls is employed as a reference roll for the other two rolls, such reference roll being held by a reference means locked in a reference position during peeling. The reference position of the reference roll is automatically adjusted relative to the lathe axis and to the other two drive rolls in response to changes in position of the lathe knife during peeling to maintain such reference roll in contact with the log. The other two drive rolls are driven by a common drive motor and supported on common support arms for movement toward and away from the reference roll while maintaining the spacing between such other two drive rolls substantially constant. The reference means includes a cam member for determining the horizontal path of the reference roll and for locking the reference roll in a vertical reference position during peeling. An automatic adjustment means including a motor driven lead screw is employed for pivoting the cam member vertically in response to changes in the position of the lathe knife during peeling to adjust the vertical reference position. The other two powered rolls are mounted on common support arms which pivot about an eccentric that is rotated by an eccentric motor to different rotational positions in response to changes in position of the knife to adjust the position of the pivot axis of such support arms in order to maintain such two drive rolls in contact with the log during peeling.

The door stop mechanism wedges beneath the door knob of a closed door and against the floor to prevent the door from being opened from the outside. An over-center effect of the mechanism assures a positive lock securing position and an angular slot arrangement provides a foldable rigid mechanism without the use of other pins or fixing devices.

An inplace gasket belling machine wherein a plastic pipe is received in a tilt clamp fixture and tilted thereon for receiving a heating bell on one end portion of the pipe. Heated fluid is directed over the inserted pipe end portion. The heating bell may be withdrawn from the pipe in intermittent steps to afford a temperature gradient along the pipe end portion. The pipe is then tilted to a horizontal disposition for the insertion of a gasket belling mandrel into the heated end portion of the pipe. A gasket magazine is supported adjacent the mandrel for automatically placing an annular gasket on the mandrel for insertion into the pipe end portion. The mandrel includes an outer housing and a mandrel body portion telescopically received within the outer housing. The outer housing has a stop shoulder and a gasket positioning sleeve extended forwardly therefrom. The mandrel body portion has a flared pipe expanding portion and a gasket carrying portion rearwardly thereof. Upon insertion of the flared portion into the heated end of the pipe, the outer housing collapses onto the mandrel body portion for precise positioning of the gasket within the pipe end portion. Upon withdrawal of the gasket positioning sleeve from said pipe end portion, the pipe end portion is collapsed by vacuum means onto the mandrel body portion and cooled prior to withdrawal of the mandrel body portion from the belled pipe end portion.

Gasket feeding apparatus for an inplace gasket belling machine

An inplace gasket belling machine wherein a plastic pipe is received in a tilt clamp fixture and tilted thereon for receiving a heating bell on one end portion of the pipe. Apparatus for heating plastic pipe

An inplace gasket belling machine for belling one end portion of a plastic pipe and inserting a gasket therein includes a preliminary mandrel and a primary mandrel. The preliminary mandrel has a pipe expanding portion disposed forwardly of a belling sleeve carrying portion whereby upon advancement of the preliminary mandrel, the belling sleeve is carried into the expanded pipe end portion. The primary mandrel has a gasket carrying portion and a gasket positioning sleeve slidable thereon whereby upon retraction of the preliminary mandrel from the belling sleeve and insertion of the primary mandrel therein, a gasket is positioned within the expanded pipe end portion. Upon retraction of the belling sleeve from the pipe end portion and retraction of the gasket positioning sleeve independently of the gasket carrying portion, the pipe end portion is collapsed onto the gasket carrying portion prior to retraction of the primary mandrel from the completed pipe end portion.
