Material sheets are provided which include at least one monolayer, wherein the at least one monolayer has a plurality of drawn unidirectional polymer fibers having a strength of greater than 1.2 GPa and a thickness of less than 100 &#x3bc;m, and wherein the material sheet includes a bonding agent of less than 13 wt % relative to the total weight of the material sheet.

Material sheet and process for its preparation

The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a multilayer material sheet comprising unidirectional high performance fibers, the process comprising the steps of positioning the fibers in a parallel fashion, consolidation of the fibers to obtain a monolayer, stacking at least two monolayers such that the fiber direction in one monolayer is at an angle &#x3b1; to the direction of the fibers in an adjacent monolayer and fixation whereby the stack of at least two monolayers is subjected to a pressure and temperature treatment for a duration of a least 2 seconds, followed by cooling the stack under pressure to a temperature of 120&#xb0; C. or lower. The invention furthermore relates to the multilayer material sheet obtainable with the process according to the invention. This multilayer material sheet has a reduced uptake of liquids.

Process for the manufacture of a multilayer material sheet, multilayer material sheet and use hereof

Multilayer material sheets containing unidirectional high performance fibers are obtained by a process which includes the steps of positioning the fibers in a parallel fashion, consolidation of the fibers to obtain a monolayer, stacking at least two monolayers such that the fiber direction in one monolayer is at an angle a to the direction of the fibers in an adjacent monolayer and fixation whereby the stack of at least two monolayers is subjected to a pressure and temperature treatment for a duration of a least 2 seconds, followed by cooling the stack under pressure to a temperature of 120&#xb0; C. or lower. The multilayer material sheet has a reduced uptake of liquids.

The invention relates to a soft and flexible surgical soft tissue mesh comprising polyethylene yarns, wherein the polyethylene yarns have a tensile strength of more than 1.0 Gpa and consist of a polyethylene with a relative viscosity of more than 5 dl/g. A further aspect of the invention is a method of producing a soft and flexible surgical soft tissue mesh comprising polyethylene yarns, wherein yarns are applied that comprise filaments made by: a) spinning at least one filament from a solution of polyethylene with a relative viscosity of more than 5 dl/g in a solvent; b) cooling the filament obtained to form a gel filament; c) removing at least partly the solvent from the gel filament; and d) drawing the filament in at least one drawing step before, during or after removing solvent.

Surgical soft tissue mesh

The invention relates to a process for making a multi-filament polyethylene yarn via a gel-spinning process, Wherein a spin finish is applied at least once in an amount of 0.1-10 mass % based on the filament, to a filament that contains less than 50 mass % of solvent; the spin finish comprising at least 95 mass % of at least one volatile compound having a boiling point at 0.1 MPa pressure of from 30 to 250&#xb0; C.; and the spin finish is subsequently removed by exposing the filament to a temperature of below the melting temperature of the filament. With this process a yarn is made that has a very low amount of residues on the surface of the fibres, without the need for a washing or extraction step, showing good mechanical properties, and very suited for e.g. biomedical applications. The invention further relates to a process for converting polyolefin fibres into a semi-finished or end-use product. The invention also concerns a polyethylene yarn and a semi-finished or end-use product obtainable by said processes, as well as to the use of thereof in biomedical applications.
