An inkjet recording medium and a coating composition for forming an inkjet recording medium. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, an inkjet recording medium is disclosed comprising an inkjet-receptive coating on a paper substrate. The inkjet-receptive coating contains a synergistic combination of pigments, binder and a multivalent metal salt such that the inkjet recording medium exhibits improved inkjet print properties, particularly when printed with a high speed inkjet printer using pigmented inks.

Recording medium for inkjet printing

An inkjet recording medium and a coating composition for forming an inkjet recording medium. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, an inkjet recording medium is disclosed comprising an inkjet-receptive coating on a paper substrate. The inkjet-receptive coating contains a synergistic combination of pigments and binder such that the inkjet recording medium exhibits improved inkjet print properties, particularly when printed with a high speed inkjet printer using pigmented inks. In accordance with certain aspects of the present invention, the inkjet recording medium further comprises a top coat of a multivalent metal salt which further enhances image quality of the inkjet printing.

Inkjet recording medium

A paper coating includes a combination of a primary pigment and a secondary pigment. The primary pigment includes anionic particles having a particle size distribution where at least 96% of the particles by weight have a particle size less than 2 microns. The secondary pigment is a cationic, grit-free pigment having an average particle size of 3 microns or less. The coating also includes up to 17 weight % of a hydrophilic styrene-butadiene latex based on the weight of the dry pigments and a co-binder. Another embodiment of this invention is a coated base sheet that includes a base sheet to which the above coating has been applied.

Paper and coating medium for multifunctional printing

High gloss ink jet recording media are produced without need for calendering or supercalendering. The media are comprised of a substrate, such as paper, an ink carrier vehicle absorptive coating on the substrate and an ink-receptive coating overlying the absorptive coating. The absorptive coating is made up in major part of a pigment component that is comprised in major part, i.e., 60-100%, and preferably 100%, of calcined clay. The absorptive coating is applied to the substrate at a thickness sufficient to provide a smooth and level surface. The ink receptive coating is porous and made up of constituents that provide requisite ink holdout and print quality functions and that, when applied to the absorptive coating, also provide a high gloss print surface without calendering or supercalendering. The recording media have exceptionally quick ink drying times and provide excellent high-gloss print quality.

High gloss ink jet recording media

A high quality ink jet recording medium is formed of a dimensionally stable absorbent paper base sheet and a coating that is primarily a reaction product of polyvinyl alcohol and boric acid. The reaction product has molecule bonds that are principally polyvinyl alcohol-boric acid-polyvinyl alcohol bonds which, when applied to the substrate, form a three-dimensional sieve or screen-like coating facilitating penetration to the absorbent base-sheet of ink carrier vehicle and holding out on the sieve or screen the ink pigments and colorants. The coating facilitates manufacture of a high quality recording medium of exceptionally low cost, ideally suited for high-speed multicolor ink jet printing in continuous web form. Methods of making the coating and the medium are disclosed.

Method of making ink jet recording media

A coating composition for an ink jet recording medium comprises an aqueous suspension of binder, a cationic fixing agent, an absorptive pigment, and a sizing agent. The coating composition combines solids content of greater than 30% with good runnability. The composition may preferably be dispersed at pH values in the range of 4.5 to 7.0. The pigment is preferably a mixture of 50% or more silica gel having a pore volume of 0.5-2.0 cc/g, and 10% or more alumina or alumina hydrate. A method for making down a composition has sequential steps of dispersing a binder in water, adding a cationic fixing agent, dispersing an alumina and an absorptive silica, adding a fluorescent whitening agent, cooling the composition, and finally adding a sizing agent.

Method for making a high solids interactive coating composition and ink jet recording medium

A coating composition for an ink jet recording medium comprises an aqueous suspension of absorptive silica pigment, a polyvinyl alcohol binder, and a cationic fixing agent. The composition is dispersed at pH values in the range of 4.0 to 7.0. The pigment is preferably a mixture of 75% or more silica gel having a pore volume of 0.5-1.5 cc/g, and 10% or more alumina or alumina hydrate. A method for making down the coating composition and applying it to a substrate is also disclosed.

Low pH coating composition for ink jet recording medium and method

A coating composition for an ink jet recording medium comprises an aqueous suspension of absorptive pigment, a binder, a sizing agent, and a cationic fixing agent. The coating composition combines solids content of greater than 30% with good runnability. The composition may preferably be dispersed at pH values in the range of 4.5 to 7.0. The pigment is preferably a mixture of 75% or more silica gel having a pore volume of 0.5-2.0 cc/g, and 10% or more alumina or alumina hydrate. A method for making down the coating composition includes the sequential steps of dispersing a polyvinyl alcohol binder in water, cooling the binder dispersion, dispersing a sizing agent, and mixing the suspension thoroughly before addition of a cationic fixing agent and pigment.
