An improved web splicing apparatus that permits better handling of rolls of paper and other materials and the automatic splicing of the beginning of one roll of paper onto the approximate end of a second roll of paper without discontinuing the flow of paper to the utilizing device and without the use of core shafts. The apparatus utilizes two opposed pairs of independently controlled and positioned web roll support arms which are pivoted about spaced shafts and rotatably support cores of the paper rolls. This invention also allows sequential splicing of rolls having unequal web widths. This configuration also allows the right and left roll support arms to move the rolls upward in an overlapping path from a single loading position, thus providing a machine having considerably reduced dimensions and floor-space requirements. Another aspect of this invention is the automatic ejection of depleted roll-cores. A further aspect is the feasibility of configuring a stacked system of multiple splicers by rotating the splicers one quarter of a revolution, allowing machines to be stacked on top of one another to reduce floor space. Yet another aspect of this invention is the ability to remove partially depleted rolls without interrupting the feed of the web. Still another aspect is the use of the motor in conjunction with the brakes to expand the core chucks to grip the inside of the roll cores.

Web-splicing apparatus

An offset printing machine that has an eccentrically mounted blanket cylinder operated by a single piston that moves the blanket cylinder from a first position separating the blanket cylinder from both the master cylinder and the impression cylinder to a second position engaging the blanket cylinder with the master cylinder for inking and to a third position engaging both the master cylinder and the impression cylinder for printing.

A cylinder setting mechanism for an offset printing device in which a blanket cylinder moves eccentrically about a first pivot point to make contact with the master cylinder so that it can be inked and then subsequently moved eccentrically about a second pivot point to make contact with the impression cylinder to transfer the image to paper. The invention enables the first and second pivot points to be adjusted to compensate for wear, plate thickness, and paper stock. In addition, a stop is provided to insure that there is a predetermined contact pressure between the surfaces of the blanket cylinder and the master cylinder. The first eccentric adjustment is made by rotating an eccentric tube at only one end about a first pivot point. The blanket cylinder rotates about the outside of the eccentric tube. The second adjustment is made by rotating an eccentric shaft on which the eccentric tube is mounted to adjust the position of the blanket cylinder in relation to the impression cylinder.

An improved plate clamping assembly for a duplicating machine which utilizes a pivoted or cantilevered beam in the leading edge plate clamp assembly and a calibrated cocking screw to enabling skewing of the plate on the plate cylinder by moving one end of the pivoted or cantilevered beam. The improved assembly also coordinates the leading and trailing edge assemblies during installation of the plate by automatically adjusting the trailing edge plate clamp assembly to accommodate for an adjustment in skewing of the leading edge of the plate by the leading edge clamp assembly. Finally, it utilizes spring assemblies to enable self-adjustment for different plate thicknesses.

Plate clamping system for a duplicating machine

A cylinder setting mechanism for a single or multi-color offset printing device in which a blanket cylinder moves eccentrically about a first pivot point to make contact with a master cylinder so that it can be inked and then subsequently moved eccentrically about a second pivot point to make contact with the impression cylinder to transfer the image to paper. The invention enables the first and second pivot points to be adjusted to compensate for wear, plate thickness, and paper stock. In addition, a stop is provided to ensure that there is a predetermined contact pressure between the surfaces of the blanket cylinder and the master cylinder. The stop is automatically adjusted when the toggle is adjusted for a different thickness plate so that the desired offset printing pressure between the master and blanket cylinder surfaces is held at the optimum level.

Offset printing machine

An apparatus is provided for handling a web of material fed from a roll. When the roll is larger than a selected amount, a roll contacting belt contacts the outer surface of the roll to aid in rotating the roll. The roll contacting belt is speed-responsive to a tension sensing means. Once the roll decreases to the selected amount, the roll contacting belt is disengaged from the roll and a core brake controls the speed of the roll. This arrangement reduces web upsets caused by out of round new large rolls and eliminates telescoping due to the action of the belt against small diameter rolls. In the illustrative form of the invention, the apparatus provides a continuous supply of web material by handling a first roll from which web material is being fed through an infeed roller and a nip roller, and a second roll from which web material is fed after the web material of the first roll has expired. The speed of the first roll is controlled by the core brake and when the web from the first roll has almost expired, the roll contacting belt contacts the outer surface of the second roll to aid in its rotation. A web tension sensing means controls the speed of the infeed roller, which speed is transmitted to the roll contacting belt so that the speed of the web at the infeed roller and the speed of the roll contacting belt are matched. The web from the first roll is adhesively connected to the web from the second roll and then severed, while both webs are at the same speed. A system is disclosed for anticipating the inherent dealy time between the actuating signal for the severing operation and the actual severing of the web.
