A process for the formation of perfluoroalkylethyl alcohols from perfluoroalkylethyl iodides is disclosed. The process involves treatment of the perfluoroalkylethyl iodide with oleum.

Oxidative drown process for 2-perfluoroalkylethyl alcohols

In a process for the manufacture of 2-perfluoroalkylethyl alochols by sulfating 2-perfluoroalkylethyl iodides with oleum followed by hydrolysis of the resulting sulfated reaction mass with water, the improvement comprising carrying out both reactions in two similar continuous reactor systems, combined in series, in each of which one of the reactant streams is contacted with the reaction mass in a zone of intense agitation which forms part of a low volume recycle loop operated under pressure and at high rates of reecycle. Preferably the zone of intense agitation in the sulfation loop has an energy input of at least 0.05 horsepower per gallon per minute with a loop recycle time of 5 seconds or less, and the hydrolysis loop has an energy input of at least 0.4 horsepower per gallon per minute with a loop recycle time of 2 seconds or less. Most preferably, the energy input to the liquids in both loops is provided by centrifugal pumps.

Process for the preparation of perfluoroalkylethyl alcohols

Synthetic polyamide textile substrate having deposited thereon a modified polymeric sulfonated phenol-formaldehyde condensation product comprising one (a) in which 10 to 25% of the polymer units contain SO.sub.3 (-) radicals and about 90 to 75% of the polymer units contain sulfone radicals and (b) in which a portion of the free hydroxyl groups thereof has been acylated or etherified, the number of said hydroxyl groups which has been acylated or etherified being sufficient to inhibit yellowing of said condensation product but insufficient to reduce materially the capacity of said condensation product to impart stain resistance to said synthetic polyamide textile substrate.

R.sub.f CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 I and R.sub.f I present in sufficient quantities so as to cause discoloration of R.sub.f CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or products made from it are reacted with an excess of an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide and a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alcohol in a closed vessel at a temperature above 80.degree. C. until neither of said iodides can be detected in said final product. NaOH and isopropanol at 100.degree.-115.degree. C. are preferred.
