A biohazard mask for civilian use comprises bidirectional HEPA filtering to protect both personal and public health during an outbreak. Several measures are taken to maximize comfort and wearability, such as comfort-fit through a gel seal, anti-fogging protection through separation of the eye volume from the mouth-nose volume and through eye moisture release valves, heat-dissipation through a net suspension, and overpressure release valves to maintain the face seal during coughing or sneezing. Wicking exhalation filters promote moisture abatement around the mouth and nose. Attractive and stylish designs, combined with accommodation for telephone communication or audio entertainment, helps wearers keep the mask on during an outbreak.

Novel films are disclosed which contain blends of ethylene-based copolymers or other elastomers with polypropylene and polyethylene. A sterilizable, plastic medical container has a body section formed of thin, multi layer film. The film has a first layer formed of cross-linkable plastic free or essentially free of extractable plasticizers, such as poly(ethylene vinyl acetate), and a second layer formed of a substantially non-cross-linkable plastic having a higher melting temperature than the first layer, such as high density polyethylene. The first layer is inwardly oriented in contact with the contents of the container. A port formed of the same plastic can be heat sealed to the body section. The container is irradiated to effect cross-linking, filled with fluid, and the port sealed. The fluid filled container can then be heat or steam sterilized.

This invention pertains to the use of polymer blends in making multiple layer films. In some layers, the elastomer or ethylene-based copolymer is blended with polypropylene, and in some layers, with polyethylene. Typical films have two to five layers. In multilayer films, at least one layer of a blend of polyethylene, preferably high density polyethylene, with elastomer and/or ethylene-based copolymers. Another layer is polypropylene blended with elastomers and/or ethylene-based copolymers. The films may have as few as two layers, one each having polypropylene and polyethylene, preferably high density polyethylene. Additional layers may be added to the two or three layer films taught herein, for variety of purposes.

A catheter is provided with an improved hub assembly. The catheter defines an end which, in turn, defines a relatively enlarged transverse dimension for the catheter wall and a thickened annular lip, when compared with an adjacent portion of the catheter. A catheter hub defines a bore portion, the bore portion in turn defining a relatively constricted portion and a relatively enlarged portion. The enlarged catheter end is positioned within the relatively enlarged portion of the bore, while the adjacent portion of the catheter is positioned within the relatively constricted portion of the hub. A rigid tubular funnel fits within the bore of the catheter. As a result of this the collapse and subsequent passage of the enlarged catheter end through the relatively constricted portion of the hub is prevented.

A thermoplastic composition is disclosed which consists essentially of a major portion of a first poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) copolymer which contains from 22 to 30 percent by weight of vinyl acetate units and exhibits a melt index as defined herein of 0.5 to 10. A minor portion of a second poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) copolymer is included which contains from 25 to 40 percent by weight of vinyl acetate units, the second copolymer exhibiting a melt index of 20 to 1000. The resulting formulation exhibits numerous good properties for use in medical devices, coupled with the capacity for radiation sterilization.

A flexible composition which is preferably radiopaque comprises a plastic material which may be mixed with from 10 to 50 percent by weight of a radiopaque filler. The plastic material comprises the product of (a) a block copolymer having thermoplastic, rubbery characteristics, having a central rubbery olefin block and terminal blocks of a polystyrene; (b) low crystallinity ethylene polymers such as poly (ethylene-vinyl acetate); and (c) a silicone gum containing a small amount of a silicon-bonded olefin group such as vinyl. Optionally, the addition of 5 to 40 percent by weight polypropylene may be included in these materials to improve their heat resistance and strength without affecting their transparency, when transparent materials are formulated.
