A QR-RLS adaptive digital filter provides fast computation without excessive computational resources. 18-bit multipliers enhance speed, and a floating point inverse square root block adjusts dynamic range in 12-dB steps. A memory stores two P-matrix copies, one being delivered with rows shifted according to the clock speed so as to enhance pipeline processing. Embodiments reliably detect modulation schemes, demodulate strong signals by passing feedback bits between multiple stages, remove impulses due to lightening, etc, erase symbol estimates which exceed an error threshold, and add high frequency noise to avoid mathematical divergence caused by excessive S/N. A genetic method is provided for identifying asynchronous spreading codes with minimum correlations, whereby randomly selected candidates compete based on Frobenius norms of their correlations, the weakest being discarded and the process being iterated. A method is provided for selecting optimal filter sampling windows for simultaneously detected symbol streams having relative timing delays.

QR-RLS adaptive digital filter with 18-bit pipeline architecture

A computationally efficient modeling system for imagery scales both the original image and corresponding principal component tiles in the same proportion to be able to extract scaled principal components. The system includes recovery of feature weights for the image model by extracting the weights from the reduced size principal component tiles. The use of the reduced size tiles to derive weights dramatically reduces computer overhead both in the generation of the files and in the generation of the weights, and is made possible by the fact that the weights from the scaled down tiles are nearly equal to the weights of the tiles associated with the full size image. The subject system thus reduces computation and the number of bits required to represent features by first scaling the image and then tiling the image in the same proportion. In one embodiment, the scaled down tiles are used as training exemplars used to generate the principal components.

Computationally efficient modeling of imagery using scaled, extracted principal components

A new approach to multispectral image compression where the intra- and cross-band correlations are jointly exploited in a surprisingly simple yet very effective manner. The key component of the algorithm is a bijection mapping of the original multispectral image into a virtual 2 dimensional scalar image. By optimally mapping the multispectral image set into a single 2 dimensional array and by subsequently applying a scalar image coding algorithm, the spatial correlation and the spectral correlation of the multispectral data set are jointly exploited. Based on the statistical characteristics of the multispectral data, the bijection mapping can be optimized to minimize the distortion introduced by the compression algorithm. The optimization reduces to the maximization of a function of the second-order statistics of the multispectral data. At high compression rates, the new algorithm outperforms traditional compression algorithms whenever the cross-band correlation is high and it yields comparable performance at low compression rates.

Bijection mapping for compression/denoising of multi-frame images

An apparatus and method for detecting gases, gasified agents or other analytes. The apparatus includes a solid body having a first surface area and a second surface area. A first, preferably polymeric, coating is superimposed on the first surface area of the solid body. A second, preferably polymeric, coating is superimposed on the second surface area of this solid body. The first coating and the second coating are different materials which adsorb different agents at different rates. A wave propagating transducer is positioned adjacent the solid body to propagate a first wavefront adjacent the first surface area of the solid body. This wave propagating transducer also propagates a second wavefront adjacent the second surface area of the solid body. These first and second wavefronts interfere to produce an interference pattern which is unique to the particular agent which is adsorbed by the first and second coatings. A transducer array records this interference pattern to identify the agent based on the nature of this interference pattern which will be uniquely characteristic of the agent.

The residual vector of the network when cascaded into a similar outer product neural network provides additional principal components defining a subspace orthogonal to the subspace defined by the principal components of the first network.

Outer product neural network

A method of cushioning and retaining a dental plate that eliminates the need for adhesives and provides the wearer a choice of thicknesses that is for all practical purposes continuous. A denture cushion according to the present invention comprises one or more sheets of cellulose filter material. The sheet periphery is shaped to cover the gum and palate confronting portions of the plate, and fits in the region between the plate and the wearer's mouth. A cushion for the lower plate has a U-shaped configuration while a cushion for the upper plate has a generally rounded or oval configuration, preferably with a plurality of peripheral notches to make the cushion more easily conform to the contour of the wearer's palate. In use, the wearer places a number of such sheets in a stack to make a cushion of the appropriate thickness and moistens them. The moistened stack is then placed on the dental plate for placement in the mount, after which the wearer's saliva cooperates with the sheet material to keep the denture in place. Despite the absence of adhesive, a surprising degree of adhesion results, thus providing the user with a high degree of comfort and mental security. The cushion does not disintegrate in use, and may be easily removed when the denture is removed. Due to the inert nature of the material employed, food flavors are left substantially unchanged.

Apparatus for introducing a preselected quantity of soluble fertilizer into a water stream in a fully dissolved state is disclosed. The apparatus includes a tank and a porous receptacle disposed within the tank and adapted to receive the fertilizer. The bottom of the receptacle is spaced upwardly from the bottom of the tank to provide a plenum volume beneath the receptacle at the bottom of the tank. Water is dispensed in a dispersed state onto the soluble fertilizer in the porous receptacle. The water drains through the fertilizer to dissolve it and the water containing the dissolved fertilizer passes through the porous receptacle and is collected in the plenum volume at the bottom of the tank. A float is provided for sensing the level of water in the plenum volume. A valve is connected to the float and interrupts the dispensing of water to the fertilizer when the level of water approaches the bottom of the porous receptacle. An outlet is provided at the bottom of the tank to supply the water containing the dissolved fertilizer in the plenum volume to the water stream.
