A method is provided for background scanning in a selective call communication system ( ) having a plurality of channels ( ), wherein a selective call device ( ) has designated thereto one of an odd and even frame compulsory decoding schedule. The selective call device ( ) decodes system configuration information (SCI) on odd SCI frames during the odd compulsory decoding schedule, scans for even SCI frames of target channels while maintaining the odd compulsory decoding schedule, and releases or maintains the odd compulsory decoding schedule based on the system configuration information found on the target channels.

Method and apparatus to enable background scanning

A communication system (10) has a plurality of selective call transceivers (30) which operate as one-way selective call receivers in one-way coverage zones (16) where no registration is required or operate as selective call transceivers in two-way coverage zones (36) where registration is required or operate in one-and-a-half way zones where registration is attempted but not required for the selective call transceiver to receive outbound messages. The system further comprises a plurality of outbound transmitters (17, 18, and 19) covering one-way coverage zones (12, 14, and 16 respectively) and a plurality of base receivers (37, 38, and 39) and transmitters (11, 13, and 15) covering two-way coverage zones (32, 34, and 36 respectively). The one-and-half-way zone is primarily a mode of operation useful in areas having 'spotty' inbound coverage and is not necessarily designated by a geographic location.

Method and apparatus for partial coverage zone selective call

A selective call receiving device (10) such as a pager is controlled to dynamically change a base frame assigned to the device and subsequent control frames derived therefrom. The time that the device is operative to look for its address in a received signal can thus be dynamically changed to improve the efficiencies of a mixed systems environment without substantially reducing the battery life of the selective call receiving device (10). In two embodiments of the invention a new base frame for the device is derived from an originally assigned base frame that is stored in the selective call receiving device. A processor (712) associates the channel identifier (404) with the frequency assignment (406) in response to the active channel indicator (408) indicating an available frequency of the geographic region and a memory (720) stores channel identifiers (404) associated with frequency assignments (406) designating available frequencies (408). The receiver (704) receives an address (333) and the channel identifier (404) on the control channel, a decoder (714) decodes the channel identifier (404) associated with the frequency assignment (406) to determine the available frequency where a message will be transmitted and the frequency synthesizer (708) switches to the available frequency indicated by the channel identifier (404) for receiving the message.

A communication system (100) for identifying messages concerning particular sports teams includes a terminal (105) for transmitting a message about a sports event as a radio frequency signal. A radio receiver (110) receives and decodes the radio frequency signal to recover therefrom the message. The radio receiver (110) also determines whether an identification code associated with the radio receiver (110) is included within a first location (205) of the message or a second location (210) of the message. When the identification code is included within the first location (205), a sports team associated with the radio receiver (110) is determined to be a home team in the sports event. When the identification code is included within the second location (210), the sports team associated with the radio receiver (110) is determined to be a visitor team in the sports event.

Method and apparatus for identifying messages associated with a sports

A selective call receiver receives a signal having a baud rate and comprising a number of phases. The number of phases are time division multiplexed to form the signal. The selective call receiver has selective call address information assigned thereto and includes a receiver for receiving and demodulating the signal and a memory for storing predetermined information. A demultiplexer is coupled to the receiver and the memory for demultiplexing the signal to recover one of the number of phases in response to the predetermined information and the baud rate. The selective call receiver also includes a decoder coupled to the demultiplexing means for decoding said one of said number of phases of said signal to derive a selective call message therefrom.

An on-site selective call receiver interacts with a wide area selective call system to increase the probability of timely message reception by a selective call receiver capable of operating in either the wide area or the on-site selective call system. The on-site system increases message throughput by interleaving data messages with voice messages. The messages broadcast by the on-site system, if data messages, are provided to the wide area system for rebroadcast or, if voice messages are stored in a voice mailbox and a 'voice message stored in mailbox' message is provided to the wide area system for transmission.

A digital tone detector utilizes pseudo sinusoidal quadrature reference signals in combination with a unique summation rule for summing the resultant quadrature accumulations to obtain a substantial improvement in the sidelobe responses of the filter. The digital tone detector can be implemented using a hardware implementation, a combination hardware and microprocessor implementation, and a microprocessor only implementation.
