A copolyester having an inherent viscosity of equal to or greater than about 0.3 formed from about 20 to about 60 mole percent based on the amount of aromatic dicarboxylic acid of one or more of isophthalic dicarboxylic acid or an alkyl diester thereof, about 40 to about 80 mole percent based on the amount of aromatic dicarboxylic acid of one or more of terephthalic acid or 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid or an alkyl diester thereof, about 10 to about 60 mole based on the total amount of dicarboxylic acids of one or more aliphatic dicarboxylic acids or an alkyl diester, about 0.1 to about 5 mole percent based on the moles of total dicarboxylic acid of one or more alkali or alkaline earth metal salts of 5-sulfoisophthalic dicarboxylic acid or an alkyl diester thereof, about 90 to 100 mole percent based on the total amount of glycols of one or more aliphatic glycols, and 0 to about 10 mole percent based on the total amount of glycols of one or more of di(ethylene glycol) and tri(ethylene glycol). The copolyesters are useful to form films and coatings.

Incorporation of 0.05 to 5 weight percent of certain microcrystalline or fibrous cellulose polymers into polyacetal molding compositions results in improved thermal stability for such compositions.

A stabilizer compound for synthetic resinous materials is a tri-substituted triazine in which each substituent is a N.sup.4 -methylated 2-keto-1,4-diazacyclohexane connected to the triazine ring through an alkylene bridge. This bridge permits efficient methylation of the N.sup.4 atom in every substituent under conditions which yield crystals having at least 90% purity. These crystals may be further purified to at least 95% purity at which purity level they contain less than 500 ppm ash. The stabilization effect of 95% pure compound in a polyacetal is such that, even with an ash content of 50 ppm, it has better stabilization properties than its 99.2% pure precursor (the non-methylated tri-substituted triazine) with an ash content of 10 ppm, as evidenced by lower formaldehyde evolved and better color retention, that is, developing less color in a water white sample after testing at 259.degree. C.

Incorporation into polyacetal molding compositions stabilized for processing with a non-meltable polymer stabilizer of 0.01-1.00 weight percent of at least one meltable co-stabilizer, said co-stabilizer being a thermal stabilizer for polyacetal, and 0.02-1.0 weight percent of at least one primary antioxidant results in significantly improved long term stability, as evidenced by greater retention of physical properties over time, of such compositions.

Polyacetal compositions containing a non-meltable polymer stabilizer

Polyacetal compositions containing 0.05 to 5 weight percent of an oxo-piperazinyl-triazine hindered amine light stabilizer wherein the hindered N.sup.4 atom in the piperazinone ring of the stabilizer is alkylated with a metyl, ethyl, or propyl group, said compositions being relatively stable upon exposure to UV light. A polyacetal composition containing a specific oxo-piperazinyl-triazine hindered amine light stabilizer wherein the hindered N.sup.4 atom is not alkylated is shown to be relatively stable upon exposure to UV light. Both compositions possess stability during melt processing and do not significantly lose physical properties upon exposure to heat and light.

Incorporation into polyacetal molding compositions stabilized with a non-meltable polymer stabilizer of 0.02-1.0 weight percent of at least one amide-containing phenolic antioxidant results in significantly improved long term stability, as evidenced by greater retention of physical properties over time, of such compositions.
