The invention provides chemical compounds for binding to a liquid phase cation having the formula R&#x2014;SO&#x2014;S&#x2014;R&#x2014;SH, wherein Rcomprises a support molecule, such as a polymer, and Rcomprises an alkyl. The polymer may be a crosslinked, polystyrene divinylbenzene copolymer having a plurality of pendant benzyl groups to which the &#x2014;SO&#x2014;S&#x2014;R&#x2014;SH ligand is attached. The alkyl group may be ethyl or propyl. The chemical compound may be used to complex cation lead or mercury, in which the cation is complexed with mercapto-sulfur of the thio-sulfonyl moiety and the terminal mercaptan to form a heterocyclic ring-like geometry incorporating the cation. A method for removing cations from a liquid stream using the chemical compounds of the present invention is also provided.

Ligands for removal of liquid phase cations and methods for same

The present invention relates to a method of capturing radioactive species in an aqueous solution and removing the radioactive species for disposal. The method includes the steps of providing a macroporous bead form sequestration resin including a sequestration ligand coupled to a sulfonic acid based polymer resin, subjecting the bead form sequestration resin to radioactive species contained in the aqueous solution to allow the bead form sequestration resin to capture the radioactive species; using an acid to lower a pH of the resin to release the radioactive species; and disposing the radioactive species in a radioactive storage facility.

Capture and removal of radioactive species from an aqueous solution

The invention provides extraction columns for the purification of an analyte (e.g., a biological macromolecule, such as a peptide, protein or nucleic acid) from a sample solution, as well as methods for making and using such columns. The columns typically include a bed of extraction media positioned in the column between two frits. In some embodiments, the extraction columns employ modified pipette tips as column bodies. In some embodiments, the invention provides methods of storing columns in a wet state.

Method and device for extracting an analyte

An organic synthesis of materials to achieve removal of low molecular weight ionic species, such as transition metal ions including cobalt, iron, nickel, and zinc, from aqueous solutions. The synthesis includes the steps of providing a cation exchange resin, functionalizing the cation exchange resin using a chloride intermediate to form a sulfonyl chloride resin, and reacting a multi-amine based ligand with the sulfonyl chloride resin to form a sequestration resin. The synthesis further includes the steps of cooling the sequestration resin, and washing and drying the sequestration resin.

A novel class of capillary electrophoresis probes and a method of employing the same are described. The novel class of capillary electrophoresis probes are comprised of one or more vinylogous carboxylic acid compounds or their derivatives. In another aspect of the present invention, a method of detecting ions in water by capillary electrophoresis is provided wherein: water is introduced into a capillary filled with an electrolyte which contains UV absorbing species comprised of one or more vinylogous carboxylic acid compounds. An electric voltage is applied along the capillary to cause ions present in the water to move along the capillary and separate. The ions displace the UV absorbing species and are detected indirectly by a UV/visible light photometric detector.
