A light directing optical structure is formed of a light waveguide preferably made of clear plastic; attached to or formed with the waveguide are a multiplicity of prisms. Each prism, due to its index of refraction, provides an aperature where light may escape the waveguide rather than remain confined due to total internal refraction. The light escaping the waveguide is reflected from a side face of the prism, and redirected in a desired direction. The propagation paths within the waveguide are such that the light emerging through the aperature is of only a fairly closely constrained range of angles; as a result the light that is redirected by the side face of the prism is of a similarly constrained range of angles. The geometry of the prism can be optimized to direct the output light perpendicular to the plane, or at a desired angle other than perpendicular. The optical structure can receive a light input along an edge, or along several edges, and its output beam is perpendicular to the structure or at some desired angle other than perpendicular. There is no restriction on the distribution and uniformity of the light input, yet the ouput is a directed and intensity controlled light source. Configurations are disclosed adapting the structure to several different possible light distribution patterns.

Disclosed is a method for preparing laminated thermoplastic composite structures comprised of at least one filler reinforced thermoplastic layer and at least one reinforcing layer of glass-fiber mat contiguous to at least one surface of said reinforced layer wherein an intermediate non-reinforced polymeric layer is applied between each glass-fiber mat/reinforced layer interface thereby achieving thorough impregnation of the glass-fiber mat with thermoplastic resin.

Thermoplastic resin compositions are formed into shaped objects in a rapid-stamping process when such compositions are pre-heated and supported upon a metal foil support. The heated and relatively flowable composition is then readily transferred by means of the foil carrier to a stamping press by automatic or manual means. The thermoplastic composition may be filled and/or reinforced, and may be in the form of sheets, logs, cakes or other irregular shaped objects.

An interfacial process for producing a poly(ester-carbonate) containing aromatic dihydroxy moieties derived from phenolphthalein. In the process, phenolphthalein polyester oligomers are formed first, and then the oligomers are reacted with phosgene and with additional aromatic or cycloaliphatic diacyl halide and with an aqueous solution of bisphenol-derived salt to form the poly(ester-carbonate).

A process for producing poly(ester carbonates) and polyesters by reacting an aromatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylate salt such as sodium terephthalate with phosgene in an organic solvent in the presence of a catalytic amount of a tertiary nitrogen compound such as pyridine, optionally separating the suspended by-product inorganic salt and then interfacially reacting with a bisphenol such as bisphenol A. Excess phosgene in the diacid chloride synthesis can be carried over to the polymerization if a poly(ester carbonate) is to be produced or removed if a polyester is to be produced. Certain low levels of a tertiary nitrogen compound with a pyridine nucleus in the organic solution do not interfere with the interfacial polymerization.

Disclosed are laminated thermoplastic sheets containing one or more pairs of thermoplastic layers wherein the total number of layers are even. Each pair is comprised of a surface layer containing a thermoplastic polymer and high aspect ratio mica flakes and a strength layer containing a thermoplastic polymer and long glass fiber. The laminated sheet is essentially warp-free with exceptionally good surface appearance, and can be stamped into a shaped article retaining these characteristics.

Poly(ester carbonate) polymers are prepared by reaction of bifunctional phenolates in an aqueous phase with phosgene and with the acyl halide of a bifunctional carboxylic acid halide such as terephthaloyl chloride in an organic solvent such as dichloromethane. At least a portion of the phosgene is reacted with the phenolate before or during reaction of the acid chloride with the phenolate to avoid the formation of polyester blocks which have limited solubility in the organic solvent. After reaction is complete, or at any stage wherein oligomers are formed, the aqueous phase can be cleanly removed and easily separated from the organic phase, and the organic phase readily washed free of by-products. The final polymer product is recovered from the washed organic phase and is colorless, substantially amorphous and melt processable, and has a high glass transition temperature.

Preparation of poly(ester carbonate) by interfacial method

A highly filled, mechanically strong and impact resistant composition is prepared by combining about 25-80% polyolefin with about 10-60% rigid inorganic particulate filler of aspect ratio less than 15, thoroughly blending using high shear equipment until the flexural modulus is at least 1.25 times that of the base polyolefin and subsequently incorporating therein, using low or non-shear techniques, about 10-45% fibrous reinforcement of length at least 11/2 inches.

The addition to filled thermoplastic resin systems of small amounts of fibrous material, of aspect ratio at least about 10 times the aspect ratio of the filler, facilitates dispersion and processing of these filled compositions into shaped articles and gives a product exhibiting superior surface properties.

A thermoplastic benzophenone polyester consisting essentially of recurring units of the formula: ##STR1## having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.85 deciliter/gram as measured in 1:1 phenol/tetrachloroethane at 25.degree. C, is useful for making shaped articles having high impact strength. A process for preparing a thermoplastic polyester according to the above formula is also described which comprises the steps of (a) adding a solution of 4,4'-benzophenonedicarboxylic acid halide in an inert, water-immiscible organic solvent to a basic aqueous solution of a salt of 2,2-bis(4'-hydroxyphenyl)propane to form and precipitate the polyester during the addition and (b) recovering the precipitated polyester. There is also provided a shaped article prepared from the polyester having an impact strength of at least about 2 ft.lb./in. of notch as measured by the Izod impact test, ASTM D-256-56.

Thermoplastic benzophenone polyester

Reinforced thermoplastic polymer composite sheets are formable into smooth, shaped objects in a rapid stamping process in a cool mold when pre-heated outside of the mold. The characterizing constituents of the composite sheet are: (1) thermoplastic resin, (2) relatively short reinforcing fibers, (3) relatively long or continuous glass fiber, and (4) a particulate loading agent. This four-component system, laminated together, produces sheets having excellent formability, mechanical properties, uniformity and in particular surface smoothness not heretofore obtainable, and are simple to fabricate continuously.
