Embodiments relate to techniques for real-time and post-scan visualization of intraoral scan data, which may include 3D images, 3D scans, 3D surfaces and/or 3D models. In one embodiment, an intraoral scanning system comprises a plurality of image sensors to periodically generate a set of intraoral two-dimensional (2D) images, wherein for each set of intraoral 2D images each image sensor of the plurality of image sensors is to generate an intraoral 2D image, and wherein relative positions and orientations of the plurality of image sensors are known. The intraoral scanning system further comprises a computing device, wherein the computing device is to perform the following for each set of intraoral 2D images: generate a combined intraoral image based on merging the set of intraoral 2D images together during scanning; and output the combined intraoral image to a display.

Viewing trajectory for 3D dental model

A scanning system comprises an intraoral scanner to capture scan data of a dental site and a computing device to generate a 3D rendering of the dental site. The scanner comprises one or more input devices configured to provide manual interaction with the computing device, where: a first activation of the input device(s) causes the scanning system to enter an inspection mode in which a view of the 3D rendering is adjustable based on movements of the intraoral scanner; and a second activation of the one or more input devices causes the scanning system to enter an overlay mode, wherein the computing device is to present a menu visualized on top of the 3D rendering on the display while the scanning system is in the overlay mode, the menu comprising one or more instructions for use of the intraoral scanner to control a user interface of the scanning system.

Guidance for scanner-based interaction with intraoral scanning system

Described herein are methods and apparatuses to obtain an image, or a set of images, of a user's teeth from one or more predetermined viewing angles. These methods and apparatuses may include guiding a user to capture a predetermined set of images of the user's teeth at specified views using an indicator that is output from a mobile telecommunications device, wherein the indicator indicates to the user one or more positions of the mobile telecommunications device relative to a mouth of the user. The captured images are uploaded to provide a treatment progress evaluation.

Methods and apparatuses for dental images

A dental articulator includes a first arm hingedly joined to a second arm about a pivot axis, where each one of the first arm and the second arm are configured to mount a dental model comprising at least one measurement element, and an inspection tool capable of checking the at least one measurable element against allowable tolerances. Each arm includes a mounting bracket having a distal portion adapted to mount the respective dental model and having a proximal portion. Each arm further has a base member having a distal portion adapted to hingedly join the first arm and the second arm about the pivot axis. A method of cryptographically secured digital dental treatment planning comprises: receiving, at an intraoral scanning system, an intraoral scan of a patient's dentition, wherein the intraoral scan comprises a three-dimensional (3D) surface representing the patient's dentition at a first arrangement; encrypting, at the intraoral scanning system, the intraoral scan to create a cryptographically secured dental record of the patient's dentition; decrypting, at a treatment planning system, the cryptographically secured dental record; determining a target arrangement for the patient's dentition; determining a digital treatment plan for the patient's dentition, wherein the digital treatment plan comprises a series of intermediate arrangements for a series of aligners to move the patient's dentition from the first arrangement toward the target arrangement; adding the digital treatment plan to the cryptographically secured dental record of the patient's dentition; and sending the cryptographically secured dental record of the patient's dentition to one or more data stores.

A scanning system comprises an intraoral scanner to capture scan data of a dental site and a computing device to generate a 3D rendering of the dental site. The scanner comprises one or more input devices configured to provide manual interaction with the computing device, where: a first activation of the input device(s) causes the scanning system to enter the scan mode, wherein the 3D rendering has a first visualization during the scan mode; and a second activation of the input device(s) causes the scanning system to enter an overlay mode, wherein the 3D rendering has a second visualization during the overlay mode, wherein the computing device is to present a menu comprising menu options on the display while the scanning system is in the overlay mode, and wherein the scanner is usable to select among the presented menu options.

Overlay for intraoral scanning system user interface

A system includes an intraoral scanner that generates a plurality of intraoral images of a dental site and a computing device. The computing device generates a first surface of a first region of the dental site based on a first intraoral image and generates a second surface of a second region of the dental site based on a second intraoral image. The computing device determines relative positions of the first surface and the second surface, wherein overlap between the first region of the dental site represented in the first intraoral image and the second region of the dental site represented the second intraoral image is insufficient for registration of the second intraoral image to the first intraoral image. The computing device outputs the first surface and the second surface having the relative positions to a display.

Multifaceted registration of intraoral scans

Described herein are methods and apparatuses to obtain an image, or a set of images, of a patient's teeth from one or more predetermined viewing angles. These methods and apparatuses may include the use an overlay comprising an outline of teeth for each predetermined viewing angle. The overlay may be used for automatically capturing, focusing and/or illuminating the teeth. Also described herein are methods and apparatuses for using a series of images of the patient's teeth including a set of predetermined views to determine if a patient is a candidate for an orthopedic procedure.

An example method comprises: performing a first intraoral scan of an oral cavity, the oral cavity including a dentition of a patient; identifying a first digital representation of dental anatomy associated with the dentition of the patient; causing the first digital representation of dental anatomy to be stored at an external storage location; appending, to a current data block of a main blockchain, a reference to a first data block of an auxiliary blockchain; appending, to the first data block of the auxiliary blockchain, an identifier of the external storage location; appending, to the current data block of the main blockchain, a first data item of the first digital representation of dental anatomy; appending, to the current data block of the main blockchain, a reference to a preceding data block of the main blockchain; and broadcasting the current data block of the main blockchain to a plurality of blockchain nodes.

A scanning system comprises a handheld intraoral scanner configured to capture scan data of a dental site when operated in a scan mode, a computing device to generate a virtual 3D model of the dental site from the captured scan data; and a display to display the virtual 3D model. The scanner comprises one or more input devices configured to provide manual interaction with the computing device, where: a first type of activation of the one or more input devices causes the scanning system to enter the scan mode; and a second type of activation of the one or more input devices causes the scanning system to enter a second mode, wherein the computing device is to present a menu comprising menu options on the display while the scanning system is in the second mode, and wherein the scanner is usable to select among the presented menu options.

A processing device receives first intraoral scan data of a first segment of a dental site and second intraoral scan data of a second segment of the dental site that does not stitch to the first intraoral scan data of the first segment of the dental site. The processing device generates a first virtual model of the first segment using the first intraoral scan data, and further generates a second virtual model of the second segment using the second intraoral scan data. The processing device arranges a spatial relationship of the first virtual model and the second virtual model.
