The present invention relates to a method of producing a heterologous polypeptide of interest in a host cell, wherein the method comprises expressing a fusion protein comprising the heterologous polypeptide of interest and a fluorescent fusion partner in a host cell modified to include a nucleic acid encoding a lytic protein operably linked to a promoter, wherein translation of the lytic protein is under control of an RNA thermometer. Also provided arecells which express the fusion protein and include a nucleic acid encoding a lytic protein operably linked to a promoter, wherein translation of the lytic protein regulated by an RNA thermometer.

A system and method for the detection and quantification of biomolecules by measuring a piezoelectric signal is described. The system comprises a plurality of elongate zinc oxide nanowires mounted generally parallel to each another on a semi conductive silicon substrate. The free ends of the nanowires are provided with biomolecules that are capable of associating with complementary biomolecules within a biological or water sample. Following incubation of the system in a sample, the association of molecules of interest with the immobilised biomolecules on the system results in the displacement of the zinc oxide nanowires. The displacement of the nanowires produces a piezoelectric voltage signal that is useful in diagnosing a pathogenic infection or the contamination of a sample.

Systems and methods for the detection of biomolecules

A device for detecting target biomolecules is provided. The device consists of an electrically conductive membrane having a biological recognition component configured to bind a target biomolecule immobilized thereon. The membrane is connected to an electric circuit by means of electrodes. A voltage source applies a voltage to the membrane and a resistance monitoring device monitors the resistance of the membrane as a selected volume of fluid sample suspected of containing the target biomolecule is delivered onto the membrane.

Device for detecting target biomolecules

A method of preparing a shelf life enhancing composition for baking mixes which contain flour with particular application to batter mixes is provided as well as a microbiological species ( ) used in the method. The method comprises forming a starting mixture including flour and water and inoculating same with a culture of the LPP strain micro-organisms; allowing the mixture to ferment in order to produce anti-microbial substances including lactic acid, a peptide and possibly other presently unidentified anti-microbial substances; and terminating the fermentation process and destroying all living cells prior to the pH of the mix decreasing to 3.3 to yield a shelf life enhancing composition. Baking mixes embodying the shelf life enhancing composition are also described.
