An apparatus and method for processing a voice message to provide low bit rate speech transmission processes the voice message to generate speech parameters which are arranged into a two dimensional parameter matrix (502) including a sequence of parameter frames. The two dimensional parameter matrix (502) is transformed using a predetermined two dimensional matrix transformation function (414) to obtain a two dimensional transform matrix (506). Distance values representing distances between templates of a set of predetermined templates and the two dimensional transform matrix (506) are then derived. The distance values derived are identified by indexes identifying the templates of the set of predetermined templates. The distance values derived are compared, and an index corresponding to a template of the set of predetermined templates having a shortest distance is selected and then transmitted.

A fax selective call receiver system (10) featuring compression of a fax message with an optimal one of a plurality of compression code-books (50). At least a portion (44) of a source document (26) is compressed with each of a plurality of code-books (50) and the smallest resulting data file is selected as the optimal compressed file. The compressed data file is transmitted to a selective call receiver (40) together with an index identifying the optimal code-book. The selective call receiver (40) stores each of the plurality of code-books and accesses the particular code-book for decompressing the data file on the basis of the received index. In an alternative embodiment, the fax message is divided into composing segments (SI1, SI2 and SI3) and each segment is compressed with each code-book to determine the optimal code-book for each segment.

A communication system has a base station having memory for storing information within a plurality of information files relating to a plurality of information services. A receiver receives an information service request for requesting information within at least one of the plurality of information files from a selective call receiver. A transmitter transmits the information requested from within the at least one information service file to the selective call receiver. The selective call receiver includes a generator for generating the information service request and a transmitter transmitting the information service request. The selective call receiver receives the information transmitted from the base station in response to the information service request and a display displays the received information.

A paging system has a signal for transmitting a variable amount of messages to paging receivers. The signal has a synchronization signal, an address field, an information and a boundary signal indicative of the boundary between the address field and the information field. Each message has addresses which are included within the address field and may have message information which is included in the information field. The information field includes two portions, a first portion having a plurality of packets for holding a predetermined amount of information and a second portion for holding a variable amount of information. If the information associated with a message is less than the predetermined amount, the message information is stored in the first portion of the information field. If the message information is greater than the predetermined amount, it is stored in the first and second portions of information field and a vector signal indicating the location of the message information is stored in the first information field. The first portion further includes at least one check signal which provides parity for a plurality of packets. Methods of generating the message signal including a group message for a plurality of receivers, receiving a message including the group message, displaying a message and conserving power during the reception of a message are described.

A method is provided for signalling wherein one or more of a group of selective call receivers periodically synchronize to a portion of a received signal and determine whether an indicator indicating the presence of information for any of the group of selective call receivers reside within the received signal. If so, the selective call receivers determine whether other portions of the received signal contain information designated for them. Otherwise, if the indicator is not present, the selective call receivers conserve an energy source.

A portable transceiver system (100) has at least one base site (200) capable of communicating with at least one of a plurality of portable transceivers (108). The at least one base site (200) comprises communicators communicating on first and second frequencies (301, 302). The first frequency (301) comprises a plurality of sub-frequencies for communicating from the at least one base site to the plurality of portable transceivers (108), and the second frequency (302) comprises a plurality of time-slots for receiving call initiation signals from the plurality of portable transceivers (108). The at least one base site (100) further comprises a receiver (214) and a detector (218) receiving and detecting, respectively, when the call initiation signal is received from one of the plurality of portable transceivers (108), a channel assignor (220), coupled to the detector (218), allocates a frequency assignment for communicating with an initiating portable transceiver (108) on one of the plurality of sub-frequencies of the first frequency (321), and a transmitter (210) transmitting the frequency assignment to the plurality of portable transceivers (108). Each of the plurality of portable transceivers (108) comprises a portable transmitter transmitting the call initiation signal in one of the plurality of time slots to the at least one base site (200), and a receiver receiving the frequency assignment from the at least one base site (200). The at least one base site (200) uses the time related position of the time-slot as an address to communicate to the initiating portable transceiver (108).

A battery charger that allows insertion of a battery for charging. When the battery is inserted it mechanically engages an activation mechanism and electrically couples to an energy source incorporated with the charger. The mechanical engagement of the battery with the activation mechanism causes at least one vent in the energy source to open. The energy source generates power when the at least one activating gas infiltrates into the energy source through the at least one open vent. The power generated by the energy source is coupled to the battery for charging.

A multiple transmitter wide area communication system comprises a central station having a plurality of acknowledge back receivers, each receiving acknowledge back responses on one of a plurality of acknowledge back channels, and a plurality of transmitters each transmitting on an individual channel. The system further comprises a plurality of remote stations each having an acknowledge back receiver which is capable of selectably receiving acknowledge back responses on each of the individual channels, and a transmitter which is capable of selectably transmitting on each of the individual channels. Each central station transmitter substantially simultaneously transmits at a high data bit rate on each individual channel the addresses for acknowledge back pagers for which messages are intended, and further transmits at a high data bit rate the associated messages intended only for those acknowledge back pagers which responded with an acknowledge back response. The central station then transmits at a high data bit rate on a preselected channel, in a predetermined sequence, to the remote stations the addresses and messages of only those acknowledge back pagers failing to respond to the previous address transmissions from the central station. The remote stations then simulcast transmit at a low data bit rate on the preselected channel the addresses of those acknowledge back pagers which failed to previously respond. The remote stations then transmit at a high data bit rate in a predetermined station sequence the messages intended for those acknowledge back pagers which responded with an acknowledge back signal.

Multiple transmitter paging system

A communication system is described which comprises a paging terminal for paging message delivery to a paging receiver and a cellular switch for call delivery to a personal communication transceiver. Utilized within the system are portable communication devices combining the personal communication transceiver and the paging receiver. The system is capable of reliably delivering a paging message to the paging receiver by first detecting when a call is in progress with the personal communication transceiver portion of the portable communication device for which a paging message to the paging receiver is intended, and then by inhibiting the transmission of the paging message to the paging receiver during the call to the personal communication transceiver. The paging message is then delivered to the paging receiver upon termination of the cell to the personal communication transceiver.

Integrated paging and radiotelephone system having improved paging

A paging terminal for transmitting address and variable length message signals to a plurality of remotely located acknowledge back and non-acknowledge back pagers, each having a unique address, includes an input for accepting variable length messages to be sent to a group of M pagers within the plurality of pagers, wherein M is an integer number. A controller orders the acknowledge back pager addresses for transmisison prior to the transmission of addresses for the non-acknowledge back pagers. A transmitter sequentially transmits the ordered addresses corresponding to the group of M pagers as an address batch during a first time period, and sequentially transmits the variable length messages for the group of pagers in a message batch including end of message markers delimiting an associated variable length message during a second time period subsequent to the first time period. The messages of the message batch are transmitted in a predetermined order bearing a known relationship to the order in which the addresses of the address batch were transmitted.

Acknowledge back paging system having the capability of matching

A multiple transmitter message transmission system provides for the distribution of message packets from a central transmitter station to a plurality of remote transmitter stations on a common channel on which the messages are delivered to a plurality of paging receivers operating within the system. The messages are delivered by simulcast transmissions from the central transmitter station and the plurality of remote transmitter stations. The system is capable of functioning with a variety of signaling protocols, and reduces the number of channels required for message distribution and delivery to a single common channel.

A paging receiver receives a message signal having an address field and a data field. The message has at least one address within the address field and a plurality of packets in the data field. The data packets contain a predetermined amount of information. A method for conserving power during reception of a message signal having an address field comprising a number of addresses involves entering the power conserving mode of operation after attempting to correlate a predetermined number of addresses with the paging receiver's address, where the predetermined number is less than the number of addresses in the address field. In addition, message information may be included within a plurality of packets by several methods including placing a corresponding plurality of addresses in the address field, each address indicating the occurrence of message information, or by indicating in one packet that information follows in a subsequent packet. Use of the second method provides for placing of tone only messages in positions left vacant in the address field by the subsequent data packets. Additionally, the invention provides for varying the size of the address field with a boundary signal.
