An insulating structure comprises a board of insulating material having two major surfaces, two side edges and top and bottom edges, and facing sheets on each of the major surfaces, and a generally rectangular closure strip having two equal and integral side portions. One side portion is bonded to one of the facing sheets and extends over said facing sheet from the top edge to the bottom edge and inwardly a short distance from one of the side edges of the board. The other side portion extends outwardly away from the board a short distance from said side edge. A plurality of the insulating structures are positioned in abutting relationship to form an insulating envelope covering a wall or roof of a building.

A method for continuously manufacturing a plastic foam reinforced by at least one fibrous material comprising continuously conveying a carrier along a production line, supplying on top of the carrier a foam-forming mixture and at least one continuously moving fibrous material, the fibrous material being non-expansible and having holes penetrable by the mixture, the mixture being supplied above both the fibrous material and the carrier or below the fibrous material and between the fibrous material and the carrier, passing the carrier, mixture and fibrous material between two spaced opposed constricting members which lie one above the other and form therebetween a metering gap for distributing the mixture over the carrier and fibrous material, and allowing the mixture after passing through the gap to freely expand and penetrate the holes of the fibrous material to form a reinforced plastic foam which has an exceptionally flat surface.

Method for the continuous manufacture of plastic foam

A process for coating geological formations and mine stoppings by applying to these substrates an aqueous, non-cementitious sealant composition comprising a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymeric binder, filler material and water, and allowing the sealant composition to dry to form an air flow resistant coating on the substrates. A highly satisfactory polymeric binder is used in the form of a polymer emulsion, such as an emulsion of an acrylic polymer having a low Tg and being sufficiently plasticized to provide a coating having prolonged air flow resistance.

A process for producing a structural laminate comprising the steps of providing a composite article comprising a facing sheet adhered to a thin, substantially incompressible yet expansible mat of long, layered glass fibers, applying a foam-forming mixture to the glass fibers, positioning a second composite article or a facing sheet over the applied foam-forming mixture, passing the facing sheets having the mat and the foam-forming mixture therebetween through the nip of two rotating rolls, and foaming the foam-forming mixture. The structural laminate is useful in thermal insulating applications.

Structural laminate and method for making same

An elutriation apparatus for de-shotting fibrous material carried in a liquid current comprises a battery of washing vessels located in sequence. A power driven mixing apparatus is provided in the first washing vessel of the sequence for dispersing the fibrous material. The upper section of each washing vessel is divided into two compartments by a baffle, while the vessel's lower section is unobstructed, whereby a current of liquid carrying fibrous material which is introduced into the upper section of the vessel to one side of the baffle travels downwardly and then underneath the baffle and upwardly to the vessel's upper section to the other side of the baffle. The latter upper section is provided with a spout for discharge of the fibrous dispersion from the vessel to the next washing vessel or to the separator apparatus located after the last washing vessel of the sequence for removal of the wash liquid from the de-shotted fibrous material. The bottom of each washing vessel is provided with a discharge apparatus for removal of the shot which settles during the cleaning operation. The elutriation method comprises the steps of (a) continuously flowing the liquid through the vessels, (b) delivering shot-containing fibrous material to the first washing vessel, (c) gently mixing this shot-containing material in the first washing vessel to convert the material into a dispersion of fibrous material and shot, (d) discharging from the washing vessels the shot which settles as the flowing liquid and associated dispersed materials pass through the vessels, and (e) separating the flowing liquid from the de-shotted fibrous material after passage of the flowing liquid and associated de-shotted fibrous material through the washing vessels.
