A process for increasing the hydrophobicity of a porous product by treating the product, or a composition providing for the product, with a water repellent material, characterized in that the porous product or a composition providing the product, is treated with an aqueous suspension of microcapsules where the microcapsules comprise a water repellent organosilicon core material selected from an organosilane, a partially condensed organosilane and a branched siloxane resin, and a shell of a silicon-based network polymer comprising silica units.

A process for preparing silicate shell microcapsules comprises adding a water reactive silicon compound to an oil in water emulsion, thereby condensing and polymerizing the water reactive silicon compound to form silicate shell microcapsules having a core comprising the oil phase of the said emulsion. The water reactive silicon compound comprises a tetraalkoxysilane and an alkoxysilane having an amino or quaternary ammonium substituted alkyl group.

Process for preparing silicate shell microcapsules

Aqueous suspensions of silicate shell microcapsules are disclosed having a core containing a burst aid wherein the silicate shell microcapsules are obtained by; I) mixing an oil phase containing a burst aid and an aqueous solution of a cationic surfactant to form an oil in water emulsion, II) adding a water reactive silicon compound comprising a tetraalkoxysilane to the oil in water emulsion, III) polymerizing the tetraalkoxysilane at the oil/water interface of the emulsion to form a microcapsule having a core containing the oil and a silicate shell.

The present invention relates to a controlled release carrier system that can be incorporated into rinse-off application products containing at least one surfactant such as heavy duty liquids (HDL), Rinse Cycle Fabric Softeners (RCFS), Shampoos, Hair Conditioners, Shower Gels, cleansing products, and that enhance deposition of lipophilic active materials like fragrance, fine perfumes, flavors and other volatile compounds onto a surface. The fragrance composition is encapsulated within a shell comprising a silicon-containing material and the shell has a mean diameter size which is lower than 30 micrometer. The surfactant composition containing the fragrance composition is washed off and the fragrance is progressively released.

Deposition of lipophilic active material in surfactant containing compositions

Aqueous suspensions of silicate shell microcapsules are disclosed wherein a first portion of the silicate shell micro-capsules contain an organopolysiloxane having at least two alkenyl groups and a hydrosilylation catalyst as Part A of a curable siloxane composition, and a second portion of the silicate shell microcapsules contain an organohydrogensiloxane as Part B of the curable siloxane composition.

A process is disclosed for preparing microcapsules having a shell thickness of at least 18 nanometers by polymerizing a tetraalkoxysilane at the oil/water interface of an emulsion containing 0.1 to 0.3 weight percent of a cationic surfactant. The microcapsules are useful to prepare encapsulated sunscreens having sufficient robustness to prevent leakage of the encapsulated sunscreen in a formulated composition.

In a process for the preparation of an emulsion of a silicone organic block copolymer in water, a polydiorganosiloxane having terminal reactive groups (A), an organic material having terminal groups (B) which are reactive with the groups (A) and a catalyst are emulsified in water with a surfactant and the resulting emulsion is subjected to conditions under which the reaction between groups (A) and (B) proceeds in the presence of the catalyst, thereby forming a copolymer chain containing polysiloxane blocks and blocks of organic material. Preferred emulsions comprise a copolymer comprising polydiorganosiloxane blocks and organic blocks, having a viscosity in the range 10 to 1000000 Pa.s and a mean particle size of 0.3 to 1000 micrometers.

Silicone polymer emulsions

A silicone oil-in-water emulsion containing a linear noncrosslinked silicone copolymer is prepared by polymerizing an OH endblocked polydimethylsiloxane monomer with an amine functional trialkoxysilane monomer in the presence of a metal catalyst. However, the polymerization is interrupted by the emulsification of this copolymer, and a carboxylic anhydride is added prior to the emulsification. The resulting emulsions are particularly useful in most personal care applications, and they also have value in textile fiber treatment, leather lubrication, fabric softening, as release agents, in water based coatings, for oil drag reduction, lubrication, and for the facilitation of cutting of cellulose materials.

Method of making silicone-in-water emulsions

Described is a method of making a silicone in water emulsion. The method comprises mixing (I) a composition containing at least one polysiloxane, at least one organosilicon material that reacts with said polysiloxane by a chain extension reaction and a metal containing catalyst for said chain extension reaction, (II) at least one surfactant and (III) water to form a mixture. The mixture is emulsified to form an emulsion which can have a wide variety of silicone volume fractions, a broad range of mono-disperse particle sizes and a wide variety of molecular weight polymers.

Method of making silicone in water emulsions

A crosslinked polysiloxane dispersion comprising a siloxane polymer, polymer mixture, or polymer/solvent mixture, capable of crosslinking via condensation, addition or free radical reactions, and having a viscosity of greater than 5000 mPa.s but less than 500,000 mPa.s, if required, 0.1 to 10 weight parts of a crosslinking agent, and, if required, depending on the nature of the catalyst and silicon cure system, 0.000001 to 10 weight parts of a catalyst, 0.5 to 10 weight parts of a surfactant or surfactant mixture, and 0.5 to 25 weight parts water per 100 weight parts siloxane polymer. Optionally, adhesion promoters, pigments, reinforcing or non-reinforcing fillers, silicone resins, stabilizers, freeze/thaw additives, etc. may also be added to the dispersion.
