Nanoparticles comprising T3 and their use in treating, e.g., cardiac conditions, for example cardiac arrest, are provided. Such nanoparticles provide improved delivery of T3 and allow for acute treatment and optionally for sustained release of T3 in a patient.

The present invention relates to intra-lumenal drug delivery devices. The device, such as a stent, is coated or impregnated with a pharmaceutical agent suitable for use in treatment of restenosis, pulmonary hypertension, and cancer. Suitable pharmaceutical agents include vasodilators and chemotherapeutics.

Formulations

A method and device for discharging an electrical defibrillation pulse or an electrical demand pacer pulse or delivering at least one pharmaceutical agent to treat conditions such as cardiac arrest, bradycardia, arrhythmia, cardiac standstill, PEA, EMD and other heart conditions are disclosed. The pharmaceutical agent can be delivered into the heart tissue, the heart cavity, or the peritoneal cavity. The pharmaceutical agent can also include analgesics such as morphine. Also included are pharmaceutical agents used to increase myocardial contractility or inhibit platelet aggregation and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and thyroid hormones such as T3 and T4 can be delivered. A method for the treatment of cardiac arrest or pulmonary hypertension patients by administering a therapeutically effective amount of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide is also encompassed by the invention.

Methods and apparatus for treating fibrillation utilize biphasic waveforms. A cardiac stimulator includes a defibrillation circuit that uses a pulse width modulated capacitive discharge to generate various biphasic waveforms, one or more of which may be delivered to the heart to treat the fibrillation.

Cardiac ventricular assist apparatus adapted to be placed by insertion through an incision in the wall of the upper abdomen below the rib cage and an incision in the inferior aspect of the pericardium proximate the heart apex comprises a flexible bladder assembly that adapted to be passed through the incision in the pericardium to a position between the pericardial sac and the epicardium. The bladder assembly is of a size such and shape such as to be engageable with a substantial portion of the outer surface of the left ventricle of a heart. The bladder assembly includes a distensible pumping bladder that is attached to a tube through which a gas can be introduced into it to compress the left ventricle and withdrawn from it to allow the ventricle to fill and a non-distensible retaining bladder, which is substantially coextensive with the pumping bladder and receives a packed body of particulate material.

A defibrillator and demand pacer catheter is defined by a flexible, electrically nonconductive probe having an electrically conductive pathway longitudinally disposed therein. Attached to one end of the probe is a defibrillator electrode capable of anchoring the probe to the septum of a heart and of transmitting from said conductive pathway directly to the interior of the septum a portion of an electrical defibrillation pulse sufficient to defibrillate the heart. The defibrillation pulse is delivered in such a manner so as to avoid injuring the heart tissue immediately adjacent to the defibrillator electrode. In the preferred embodiment, the defibrillator electrode is helical; however, it is also envisioned as being a lance. Alternatively, the catheter further comprises a ground electrode, a demand pacer electrode, and a supplemental defibrillator electrode attached to the probe.
