Photopolymerizable compositions are described containing a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer, a photoinitiator or initiator system, and selected acidic polymeric binders. The organic binder mixture contains a compound chosen from each of two selected classes. These photopolymerizable compositions yield superior processability, i.e., on developing and stripping, in solely aqueous alkaline media devoid of organic solvents, decreased softness and/or tackiness, and improved adhesion when compared to the prior art. The compositions are particularly useful for preparing photoresists.

Polymeric binders for aqueous processable photopolymer compositions

A composite, photohardenable element comprising in intimate surface contact (a) a resist layer, photohardenable by exposure to actinic radiation and; (b) a soluble layer comprising a macromolecular organic polymer and at least one ultraviolet absorbent dye or pigment. In the preferred elements, the layers are disposed between and adherent to a cover sheet and a support film, respectively.

Composite, mask-forming, photohardenable elements

A photohardenable thermoplastic stratum containing a thermally activated blowing agent may be used to record images by imagewise exposing the stratum to actinic radiation adapted to polymerize and harden the stratum image-wise, and heating the exposed stratum to soften the unhardened areas and decompose the blowing agent, whereby a positive image of microscopic bubbles is formed in said stratum.
