A cost effective, pressure-sealed, multi-page paper assembly is configured as a mailer-type of assembly for use as a business form, direct mail piece or other document to distribute information to end-users. The multi-page paper assembly is formed from a single ply or sheet of paper that permits use of such cost-saving technologies as laser printing and imaging of the single ply or sheet. The multi-page paper assembly includes a central transverse line of cross fold perforations and a plurality of lines of fold assist perforations that permit the single ply or sheet to be folded into a desired Z-fold, C-fold, eccentric C-fold, V-fold, double parallel-fold or other folded configuration having a number of inboard panels to serve as pages of the assembly. Deposits of pressure-activated cohesive along one or both surfaces of the single ply or sheet are placed to define those panels to serve as inboard boards and to adhere portions of the ply or sheet when folded. Cohesive deposits can form seals and thereby a secure seal multi-page paper assembly when pressure-sealed to protect contents. Use of low-tack deposits can form unsecured seals for use with direct mail pieces. Removal of stub portions of the paper assembly permits the sealed assembly to be opened in a book-like manner along the sealed cross fold perforations and access provided to the multiple of pages contained therein.

Cross folded, pressure sealed multi-page paper assembly and methods of making same

An intermediate for a mailer type business form is provided that is Z-folded to produce a mailer type business form with built-in reply envelope. A large area is provided for printing statement, remittance and/or other information and yet the reply envelope produced accepts a conventional size personal check without folding. This is accomplished by providing a re-wettable adhesive for forming and sealing the reply envelope. The outgoing address indicia is imaged on the top face of one of the panels that forms the return envelope so that the outgoing address is concealed when the reply envelope is formed. The reply address indicia is imaged on the bottom face on the second panel defining the reply envelope so that when the reply envelope is formed, the reply address is the only exposed address on the reply envelope.

A business form intermediate with pressure activated cohesive in separable side margins is otherwise conventional except for the particular patterns of cohesive. The patterns prevent cupping (i.e. flexing or distortion) of the vertical edges. Substantially straight line series of substantially rectangular spots having dimensions about &frac14; inch by &frac18; inch, and spaced from each other about &frac12; inch, are preferably provided, along the vertical (side) edges of the intermediate on at least one face, and preferably both faces (not staggered horizontally, but not significantly vertically overlapping, from one face to the other).

Pressure seal form configurations which reduce printer jams

A pressure seal business form including a sheet having a front and a back, top edge, bottom edge, first and second longitudinal edges, at least two panels separated by at least one fold line, longitudinal lines of weakness parallel to the first and second longitudinal edges forming a first and second longitudinal margin portion, horizontal patterns of pressure seal cohesive, and a longitudinal pattern of cohesive positioned in the first and second margin portions defined by at least one individual cohesive configuration. Each individual configuration of cohesive being defined by a first line AB including end points A and B and a second line CD having end points C and D. Line AB and CD are parallel to each other and to the longitudinal edges of the sheet. A third line BD having end points B and D and a fourth line AC having end points A and C. Lines BD and AC are parallel to each other. The angle ABD between lines AB and BD is less than 90.degree.. When the panels of the sheet are folded about the fold lines, the individual configurations defining the longitudinal patterns of cohesive conform and the horizontal patterns of cohesive conform. A pressure seal form is then created by applying external pressure so that the pressure seal cohesive on the conforming patterns adhere and a full perimeter seal is created.

A business form intermediate with pressure activated cohesive in separable side margins is otherwise conventional except for the particular patterns of cohesive. The patterns prevent cupping (i.e. flexing or distortion) of the vertical edges. Substantially straight line series of substantially rectangular spots having dimensions about 1/4 inch by 1/8 inch, and spaced from each other about 1/2 inch, are preferably provided, along the vertical (side) edges of the intermediate on at least one face, and preferably both faces (not staggered horizontally, but not significantly vertically overlapping, from one face to the other).

Pressure seal form configurations to reduce printer jams

An intermediate for a C-fold mailer type business form is provided that does not cup or distort as a result of pressure sensitive cohesive provided on both the face and the back of the same panel. This improves the processing of the intermediate through cut sheet laser printers and post-processing equipment, and allows for easier stacking during manufacture. A sheet of paper having first and second faces and opposite parallel longitudinal edges has first and second transverse fold lines forming a sheet into three panels, and first and second longitudinal lines of weakness forming longitudinal marginal portions with the longitudinal edges. A first pattern (such as spaced quadrate cohesive elements) is formed in the marginal portions of the first face of the third panel while a second pattern of pressure cohesive elements is formed on the second face of the marginal portions of the third panel, the second pattern of elements staggered with respect to the first pattern so that cupping or distortion of the sheet at the third panel is substantially prevented. Other patterns of pressure cohesive formed on the marginal portions cooperate with the first and second panels to seal the longitudinal edges of the mailer, the other patterns typically also comprising spaced quadrate cohesive elements. A mailer is formed from the intermediate by C-folding the sheet about the first and second fold lines.

A business form is provided that can be readily attached to, and then detached from (without adhesive residue remaining on it) an appliance or packaging for an appliance. The business form can have warranty and/or service contract information printed on it. The form includes first, second and third plies, the third ply sandwiched between the first and second plies, with adhesive for attaching the plies together along their peripheral edges. A reply envelope is nested within and between the plies, and a pattern of readily removable adhesive is disposed on the outer face of the second ply. The adhesive is preferably provided by transfer tape, which includes a substrate, with permanent adhesive on the opposite face from the readily removable adhesive, and with the permanent adhesive covered by release paper. When the form is removed from the packaging or appliance, it is detached at lines of weakness near the adhesive connecting the plies together, and then the service contract within it is filled out, inserted into the reply envelope, and mailed to the reply addressee.

A mailer type business form, and intermediate, are constructed from a single sheet of paper having four virtually identically sized panels, the sheet folded about an intermediate fold line, and then two other fold lines, to form a four ply mailer. First and fourth panels of the intermediate define the third and fourth plies of the mailer, and provide a return envelope sealed along three edges and open at the fourth, with a flap provided with a rewettable adhesive strip at the open edge. The second and third panels are held together by longitudinal strips of adhesive adjacent the longitudinal edges of those panels, with perforations provided in the second and third panels (but not the first and fourth panels) to allow removal of the connecting adhesive. The fold lines connecting the first and second panels and third and fourth panels are preferably perforations, and a longitudinal perforation is provided in the second panel to form the statement and reminder portions. All variable printing on the intermediate is provided on the second face of the sheet (which includes the outgoing address in the third panel, and the reply address in the first panel) so that the mailer may be constructed by simplex imaging.

A pocket containing business form is formed from an intermediate which comprises a sheet of paperlike material having dimensions of about 8.times.11 inches. The sheet is guillotine cut in two lengthwise, and each of the sections is eccentrically Z-folded to form a pocket, with pressure activated adhesive strips sealed along the edges of the pocket. The portion of the sheet exposed above the pocket is imaged by a laser printer, etc., for example, to indicate due dates for library books. The form is glued on one of the inside covers of a library book, and a 3.times.5 card containing information about the book is inserted in the pocket.

An intermediate, and a mailer type business form constructed from the intermediate, can be imaged on both sides and easily formed into a final product having four panels. A sheet of paper has first and second faces with first and second longitudinal marginal portions formed by first and second longitudinal perforations parallel to the longitudinal edges of the sheet. Pressure seal adhesive is disposed in longitudinally elongated patterns in the first and second longitudinal marginal portions on the first face, and first, second and third fold lines formed in the sheet divide the sheet into first, second, third and fourth panels of substantially equal size. Other elongated patterns of pressure seal adhesive are disposed in the first and second longitudinal marginal portions of the second face. The sheet is devoid of adhesive extending along the ends of the sheet, or parallel to the ends. The mailer is printed with information on the entire first face, and on the third and fourth panels of the second face, and an outgoing address, and directions for opening of the mailer, are provided on the second face of the first and/or second panel.

A folded (e.g., Z-folded) mailer type business form is constructed so that it may be printed using an IBM 3800 printer without sticking to the printer fuser or backer rolls. Pressure sensitive adhesive patterns (e.g., discontinuous strips) are placed on the first face of a paper sheet near a first transverse edge, and the second face of the paper sheet near a second transverse edge. The spacings from the edge are about 5/16 inches in each case, sufficient to insure that the adhesive is not engaged by the printer rolls during pausing of the printer.

A multi page mailer type business form is constructed by applying a first adhesive pattern to the top sheet bottom face perimeter areas, a second adhesive pattern to the bottom sheet top face perimeter areas, and applying third and fourth adhesive patterns to the middle sheet top and bottom face perimeter areas respectively. Variable information is printed on the top, bottom and middle sheets including machine readable identification information (bar code) which is common to the sheets that are to be assembled into a final multi page mailer. The set is accumulated, and verified by scanning the identification of information, and then the perimeter adhesive patterns are sealed. The adhesive is preferably pressure sensitive adhesive, and the final mailer produced has a book-like construction. The adhesive patterns are such that the top and bottom sheets can be provided in a stack without the perimeter adhesive patterns aligning, and the middle sheets can be provided in a separate stock. A four-part (or more) form may be constructed by slitting two sheets with adhesive patterns into four.

Pressure seal multiple part

A business form, and intermediate for constructing the form, suitable for use as a packing list or invoice. A regular (bond) sheet of paper is constructed into three approximately equal size panels which are Z-folded about fold lines. The first face of the first panel has address indicia printed on it, while the second face of the third panel has two or more strips of transfer tape disposed on it, spaced from each other and parallel to the lines of weakness, facilitating attachment of the form to a package. Invoice information is preferably printed on the first face of the second and third panels. The panels are held together in a packaging slip configuration by strips of pressure seal adhesive. In use, by detaching various portions of the form along perforations the form can be folded about a pressure seal adhesive line between the second and third panels second face adjacent the second fold line, and along the second fold line so that the first face second and third panels (invoices) are readily seen.

A multi page mailer type business form is constructed by applying a first adhesive pattern to the top sheet bottom face perimeter areas, a second adhesive pattern to the bottom sheet top face perimeter areas, and applying third and fourth adhesive patterns to the middle sheet top and bottom face perimeter areas respectively. Variable information is printed on the top, bottom and middle sheets including machine readable identification information (bar code) which is common to the sheets that are to be assembled into a final multi page mailer. The set is accumulated, and verified by scanning the identification information, and then the perimeter adhesive patterns are sealed. The adhesive is preferably pressure sensitive adhesive, and the final mailer produced has a book-like construction. The adhesive patterns are such that the top and bottom sheets can be provided in a stack without the perimeter adhesive patterns aligning, and the middle sheets can be provided in a separate stack. A four-part (or more) form may be constructed by slitting two sheets with adhesive patterns into four.

An intermediate for a business form can be constructed into a mailer type business form that allows variable return address and addressee information to be printed at the same time that the inside of the mailer is printed. First and second die cut windows are formed in a sheet of paper, with a first flap having a longitudinal edge integral with the paper and adapted to pivot to fill the first die cut window. A second flap is attached to the first, and overlaps it to such an extent that it can be pivoted with the first flap to overlie the second window. The flaps are pivoted inwardly and then printed at the same time that the inside of the mailer is printed, with variable return address information printed on the first flap, and addressee information printed on the second flap portion adapted to overlie the second window. A transparent patch may cover the second window, and the second flap may be adhesively secured in place in contact with the transparent patch. The paper is folded about a center line with both windows on the same side of a center line, and connected at the edges by adhesive strips to form a mailer, with the flaps disposed between the top and bottom plies of the mailer.
