Methods, systems, and apparatus are disclosed for electrical power grid visualization. A computer-implemented method includes: obtaining power grid data including different temporal and spatially dependent characteristics of a power grid, the characteristics including a first characteristic, a second characteristic, and a third characteristic; and generating a graphical user interface (GUI) representing a visualization of the power grid data. The GUI includes a line-diagram representation of power lines in the power grid overlaid on a map of a geographic region in which the power grid is located, the line-diagram including a plurality of line segments, wherein attributes of each line segment represent the power grid data at a particular spatial location of the power grid. The attributes include a time-changing thickness of the line segment representing the first characteristic; a plurality of time-changing directional arrows on the line segment representing the second characteristic; and a color shading representing the third characteristic.

A computer-implemented method executed by one or more processors includes receiving interconnection data for a proposed interconnection to a power grid; accessing a power grid model including a topological representation of the power grid, electrical specifications of grid components, and empirical operation characteristics; and generating, using the interconnection data for the proposed interconnection to the power grid, and the power grid model, simulated power grid data. The simulated power grid data is based on simulating operation of the power grid with the proposed interconnection coupled to a location of the power grid identified by the interconnection data during a simulated time period. The simulated power grid data includes a plurality of different temporal and spatially dependent characteristics of the power grid. The method includes evaluating, using one or more metrics, the simulated power grid data; and outputting evaluation results of the one or more metrics.

Methods, systems, and apparatus for an infrared and visible imaging system. In some implementations, Image data from a visible-light camera is obtained. A position of a device is determined based at least in part on the image data from the visible-light camera. An infrared camera is positioned so that the device is in a field of view of the infrared camera, with the field of view of the infrared camera being narrower than the field of view of the visible-light camera. Infrared image data from the infrared camera that includes regions representing the device is obtained. Infrared image data from the infrared camera that represents the device is recorded. Position data is also recorded that indicates the location and pose of the infrared camera when the infrared image data is acquired by the infrared camera.

A compound motor-generator system including a first motor-generator and a second motor-generator. The first motor generator includes a stator having a set of three-phase field windings and a first rotor disposed inside and coaxial with the stator and configured to rotate relative to the stator. The second motor-generator includes a rotational stator and a second rotor coupled to a common shaft with the rotor of the first motor-generator and disposed inside and coaxial to the rotational stator. Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs stored on a computer-readable storage medium, for obtaining, from an electric field sensor, measurements of a net electric field resulting from a combination of respective electric fields from two or more electrical power conductors that are proximate to the electric field sensor. The apparatus detects a change in successive measurements of the net electric field. The apparatus determines, based on the change, that an electrical fault has occurred in one of the two or more electric power conductors. The apparatus sends to a server system, data indicating that the electrical fault has occurred in one of the two or more electric power conductors.

Ground fault detection in ungrounded power systems

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs stored on a computer-readable storage medium, for obtaining a reference phase signal that is synchronized with an alternating current (AC) phase of a multi-phase electrical power distribution system. The apparatus obtains output signals from sensors, each output signal representative of an electromagnetic emission detected by a respective sensor. The apparatus identifies, based on comparing respective phases of the output signals to the reference phase signal, a particular AC phase of the multi-phase electrical power distribution system associated with a source of the emissions. The apparatus provides an indication of the particular AC phase to a user.

Infrared and visible imaging system for device identification and tracking

Disclosed herein are systems and methods related to electric power transfer between an aerial vehicle of an airborne wind turbine and a power grid. An example power conversion system may include power converters, a DC bus connecting the power converters to the aerial vehicle, and an AC bus connecting the power converters to the power grid. The power converters may be configured to provide AC/DC power conversion between the aerial vehicle and the power grid. The power conversion system may also include switches operable to either (i) electrically connect a respective power converter to the DC bus or electrically isolate the respective power converter from the DC bus. The power conversion system may also include one or more power supplies that can be connected to the DC bus to provide backup power in the event a power converter or the power grid malfunctions.

Power management for an airborne wind turbine

While motors or generators stacked in series may allow for higher operating voltages, such motors or generators may also exhibit instability. To minimize instability, the motors or generators may be controlled to have an approximately equal current. An example motor system may include motor stacks connected in series, each motor stack exhibiting a respective stack voltage and a respective differential power (based on a difference in power between motors in the motor stack). A control system may average the stack voltages to generate an average stack voltage and generate a nominal stack power corresponding to each stack voltage. The control system may receive the differential powers, combine each differential power and nominal stack power for the respective motor stack to generate first and a second motor powers, and control each motor stack using the first and second motor powers.

Control methods and systems for motors and generators operating in a stacked configuration

This disclosure discusses systems and methods related to the following example scenarios. When an aerial vehicle of an airborne wind turbine is functioning normally in motoring mode, a voltage converter may receive a nominal voltage from a power conversion system and provide the nominal voltage to the aerial vehicle. When the aerial vehicle is experiencing a fault in motoring mode, the voltage converter may receive the nominal voltage and provide a reduced fault voltage to the aerial vehicle. When the aerial vehicle is functioning normally in power-generating mode, the voltage converter may receive the nominal voltage from the aerial vehicle and provide the nominal voltage to the power conversion system. When the aerial vehicle is experiencing a fault in power-generating mode, the voltage converter may receive a reduced fault voltage from the aerial vehicle, boost the fault voltage, and provide the boosted fault voltage to the power conversion system.
