The present invention relates to methods and compositions of treating patients suffering from, or at risk for, DNA damage and to increase life span, i.e., prevent or slow the aging process in all species. The treatment includes administering to the patient a pharmaceutical composition that includes carbon monoxide.

In addition, carbon monoxide may be used as a biomarker or therapeutic agent for reducing respiratory distress in lung transplant patients and to reduce or inhibit oxidative stress and inflammation in transplant patients.

The present invention features methods for transplanting organs, tissues and individual cells. Also featured are methods for maintaining cells in vitro and for enhancing survival and/or function of cells following transplantation. The methods include the administration of carbon monoxide in an amount sufficient to enhance cell survival and/or function.
