A method and device may be used to avoid surgically re-opening a stoma or the like in an animal, including human beings. The stoma stabilitating device comprises an anchoring portion, preferably flat, that includes an opening configured to surround a stoma. The anchoring portion preferably includes an inner tension ring attached to an inner edge to define the opening and a tension ring attached to an outer edge. The anchoring portion may include additional structural rings. The device may be of a mesh construction and used to maintain, for example, a stoma, a fistula, a tracheotomy and any other pathway from outside the body to the inner part of the body. The device may be used to maintain an open pathway for air and to maneuver devices within a cavity. The device may also be used internally.

Stoma stabilitating device and method

The systems, methods and products of the invention include systems and methods for manufacturing servo tracks on a magnetic tape. In one aspect, the invention includes systems for manufacturing magnetic tapes having servo tracks thereon wherein the servo tracks are optically detectable and are capable of being processed by a servo control system for maintaining alignment of a magnetic recording head with the data tracks on the recording side of the magnetic tape. In one practice, the manufacturing systems described herein engrave the servo tracks onto the non-recording side of a magnetic tape by directing a laser beam at the non- recording side of the magnetic tape. In another practice, the manufacturing systems described herein engrave the servo tracks onto the magnetic side of a magnetic tape by directing a laser beam at the magnetic side of the magnetic tape. Such engraved patterns can act as optical servo tracks for maintaining alignment of the recording head with the data tracks on the magnetic tape.

Systems and method for forming a servo pattern on a magnetic tape

According to one aspect, systems and methods are provided for detecting the relative position of a transducer head with respect to a storage medium utilizing optically diffractive media. In one example, a head positioning servo system includes a transducer head assembly, a diffractive medium spatially fixed with respect to the transducer head assembly, a light source for illuminating at least a portion of a magnetic storage medium and the diffractive medium, a detector for detecting light from the light source illuminating the magnetic storage medium and the diffractive medium, and a controller for adjusting the position of the transducer head with respect to the magnetic storage medium in response to the detected light.

Diffractive position sensors and control systems

An optical tracking system is presented which aligns a recording head with a magnetic tape. The system relies on an optically detectable servo track on the back of the tape. The servo track is formed by repeatedly engraving, at spaced intervals, three co-linear marks perpendicular to the length of the tape. Laser light reflects off the marks, and passes through a ball lens that directs the reflected light on to separate light detectors, one for each mark. By recording characteristics of the reflected light, the detectors transmit information to the system that permits the recording head to be properly aligned with the tape.

Optical apparatus for tracking a magnetic tape

In one example, a method is provided for detecting the relative position of a transducer head with respect to a storage medium utilizing existing or previously written data structures on a magnetic storage tape and optically diffractive media. The method includes generating a read signal from a read element associated with a transducer head, the read signal generated from a reference data track stored on a magnetic storage medium, and determining a relative position of a first diffractive medium with respect to a second diffractive medium, wherein the first diffractive medium is associated with the storage medium. Servo methods and systems using existing data structures and optical masks

The present invention provides servo systems and accompanying methods for determining the relative position of a transducer head to a magnetic storage tape utilizing the position of the magnetic storage tape edge. In one example, a method for positioning a transducer head relative to a magnetic storage medium includes optically sensing a position of an edge of the storage medium, and repositioning the transducer head relative to the storage medium based on the read signal and the position of the edge of the storage medium.

Servo methods and systems using masked medium edge position sensors

According to one aspect, methods and systems for determining the position of a recording head using existing data structures on magnetic storage media are provided. In one example, a recording head writes data to an active track on a magnetic storage tape, the recording head including a write element and a read element in a known spatial relationship, wherein the read element is configured to access at least a portion of a reference track when the write element is accessing the active track. A controller determines a relative position of the transducer element to the reference track and repositions the recording head to write data to the active track. The read element may be a backward channel reader or dedicated read element of the recording head for reading reference tracks during read and/or write operations.

Methods and systems for magnetic recording

A magnetic storage medium formed on a front major surface of a tape substrate defines a multiplicity of longitudinal data recording and playback tracks, each track having a nominal lateral location relative to the other tracks: and a predetermined optically manifested track servo pattern defined on the back major surface of the tape for indicating lateral displacement of the tape from a nominal lateral location of the track during tape movement across a read/write head. In one example, a method for positioning a transducer head relative to a magnetic storage medium includes sensing a read signal from a read element associated with a transducer head, the read signal in response to a reference data track stored on a magnetic storage medium, optically sensing a position of an edge of the storage medium, and repositioning the transducer head relative to the storage medium in response to the read signal and the position of the edge of the storage medium.

In one aspect, an electromagnetic or capacitive sensing position system for determining the relative position of at least one void in a conductive material is provided. In one example, the system includes a sensor (or probe) having at least two probe elements (e.g., tips or plates). The position of the probe relative to the at least one void is determined in response to an electrical signal (e.g., a differential signal) measured across the two probe elements that varies in response to interaction of the probe elements with the at least one void.
