A method of, and apparatus for, arthroplasty of a knee joint comprising obtaining a desired spacing of the femur from the tibia by inserting a spacer into the knee joint between the femur and the tibia. The spacer is used as a reference for securing a guide jig in position about the knee joint for guiding resection of one or both of the femur and tibia for fitting of tibial and/or femoral prostheses. A method of resecting the femur while moving the tibia through an arc of motion to remove bone to the desired depth, a method of determining the position of the guide jig, the guide jog, an alignment device and the spacer are also described.

A cutting device for being inserted into a knee joint between the tibia and the femur, wherein the cutting device is adapted for resecting bone from the femur to a desired depth in a path of travel of the tibia when located in the knee joint and operated as the tibia is moved through an arc of motion about the femur between backward and forward positions. A cutting device is also disclosed for being inserted into a knee joint between the tibia and the femur for resecting bone from the tibia to a desired depth to form a recess in a condyle of the tibia for reception of a tibial implant, comprising a body being located between the tibia and the femur, a cutter for resecting the bone from the tibia to form the recess and a drive mechanism for driving the cutter to resect the bone and being arranged in the body, wherein the cutter is mounted on the body and protrudes therefrom for resecting the bone from the tibia.

Method for soft tissue reconstruction

The invention comprises a method of reconstructing the anterior cruciate ligament in the right knee of a patient comprising the steps of forming a tendon graft of tendon, other soft tissue, ligament (including bone blocks if required), or artificial tendon; forming a hole into or through the lateral condyle of the patient's right femur from a point in the intercondylar notch therein, the hole extending anteriorly and laterally; forming a suitably positioned hole through the patient's right tibia opening at one end adjacent the medial tibial spine of the tibia; drawing one end of the tendon graft into the hole in the femur and simultaneously or sequentially drawing the other end of the tendon graft into the hole in the tibia; inserting the leading end of a suitable screw having a left handed thread into the hole in the femur from the intercondylar notch until the trailing end of the screw is at least adjacent he surface of the intercondylar notch; and after tensioning the tendon graft appropriately, securing the other end of the tendon graft to the tibia. A suitable screw for securing a tendon graft is also disclosed.
