A coring bit assembly for conveyance via wireline or drillstring in a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation. The coring bit assembly includes a coring shaft and a thrust ring coupled to an end of the coring shaft. A static sleeve is disposed inside the coring shaft and having a flange coupled to the thrust ring to space the static sleeve from the coring shaft to form a drilling fluid passageway between the coring shaft and the static sleeve. An axial fluid pump is disposed on the coring shaft to engage with the static sleeve to drive drilling fluid through the drilling fluid passageway formation.

Coring apparatus and methods to use the same

A sidewall coring apparatus for obtaining a plurality of formation cores from a sidewall of a wellbore includes a core catching tube configured to be sealed downhole and to store at least one of the formation cores therein. The core catching tubes includes a first end that may be sealed by a first sealing mechanism, and an opposite end that may be sealed by a second sealing mechanism. The core catching tube also includes a fluid evacuation port that may be sealed downhole.

A method for operating a coring tool includes moving a handling piston of a coring tool from a first position to a second position with respect to the coring tool where the handling piston moving through a coring bit to the second position. The method also includes measuring the distance of the movement of the handling piston between the first position and the second position to determine a core length, comparing the measured distance with a predetermined threshold, and operating a coring bit of the coring tool to obtain a core sample in response to determining that the measured distance is less than the predetermined threshold.

An apparatus for conveyance via wireline or drillstring in a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation, the apparatus comprising a coring bit assembly, a first motor operatively coupled to the coring bit assembly via a gear box to rotationally drive the coring bit assembly, and a second motor to drive the coring bit assembly into the formation while the coring bit assembly is rotated by the first motor, wherein the coring bit assembly comprises a feature to permit the coring bit assembly to be broken when the coring bit assembly becomes stuck in the formation.

A sidewall coring apparatus for obtaining a plurality of formation cores from a sidewall of a wellbore includes a core catching tube configured to be sealed downhole and to store the plurality of formation cores therein. The core catching tubes includes an inner sleeve and an outer sleeve concentric with the inner sleeve. The inner and outer sleeves include corresponding slots configured to align in response to relative movement of the inner and outer sleeves, and when aligned the slots of the inner and outer sleeves allow evacuation of fluid from the core catching tube as each of the plurality of formation cores is inserted into the core catching tube.

In one embodiment, a heat dissipating apparatus includes a chassis positionable within a housing of a downhole tool. The heat dissipating apparatus also includes a heat sink coupled to the chassis and a displacement mechanism coupled to the heat sink. The displacement mechanism is actuatable to move the heat sink, with respect to the chassis, between a first position and a second position such that in the first position the heat sink is radially retracted toward the chassis to form a gap between the heat sink and the housing and such that in the second position the heat sink is radially extended from the chassis to contact the housing.

Dissipating heat from a downhole heat generating device

An apparatus comprising a sidewall coring tool configured to obtain a plurality of sidewall formation cores from a sidewall of a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation, wherein the sidewall coring tool comprises a core catching tube configured to store the plurality of sidewall formation cores therein, wherein the core catching tube comprises a fluid port configured to allow evacuation of fluid from the core catching tube as each of the plurality of sidewall formation cores is introduced therein, and wherein the core catching tube, including the fluid port, is configured to be sealed downhole without removing the sidewall coring tool from the wellbore.

A coring tool for use in a borehole formed in a subterranean formation includes a tool housing with a coring aperture and a core receptacle. A coring bit is mounted within the tool housing and movable between retracted and extended positions by a series of pivotably connected extension link arms. Another set of link arms rotates the coring bit between coring and eject positions. The coring tool may also include a multi-column core storage magazine with shifters to move cores or core holders between columns. The coring tool may be used to measure core lengths during operation and facilitates retrieval of cores having larger lengths and diameters than conventional sidewall coring tools.

The present disclosure relates to heat dissipation apparatus that may be used within a downhole tool. The heat dissipation apparatus may include one or more of a cover configured to attach to a heat generating device, a thermal conduit thermally coupled to the cover, and a heat sink thermally coupled to the thermal conduit, in which the heat sink is configured to dissipate heat from the heat generating device through the cover and the thermal conduit.

A coring apparatus that includes a housing that is selectively pivotable in a downhole tool, a rotatable coring bit, a gear drive rotatively coupled to the housing, and a key member configured to engage an inner surface of the gear drive and an outer surface of the coring bit and configured to maintain a rotational relationship between the coring bit and the gear drive. A pinion is rotatively coupled to the housing and configured to engage an outer surface of the gear drive, and a motor is affixed to the housing and operatively coupled to the pinion. The gear drive, the key member, the pinion and the motor are configured to pivot in unison with the housing.

A downhole tool configured for conveyance within a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation, the tool comprising an electronics system and a heat-dissipating apparatus. The electronics system includes a controller, a memory, and surface communicating means, at least one of which is a heat-generating source. The heat-dissipating apparatus includes: a chassis engaging the heat-generating source and having a fluid passageway allowing fluid flow therethrough; a radiator for further heat dissipation; a pump; sensors to measure temperature of the chassis and the wellbore; and a compensator to regulate the pressure of fluid in the passageway.
