For a planned maneuver that may adversely impact the other road user, an intention in relation to the carrying out of the maneuver is associated with the planned maneuver and the intention is communicated to the other road user.

A control unit for a vehicle is set up to receive environment data from one or more ambient sensors of the vehicle. The control unit is additionally set up to take the environment data as a basis for detecting at least one road user in an environment of the vehicle, and to take the environment data and a driving strategy as a basis for determining whether there is a need for communication between road user and vehicle and what content needs to be communicated in what way.
