A motor generator system (120) in accordance with the invention includes a prime mover (21) for driving an output shaft (18), a main motor generator (105), having a rotor driven by the output shaft, for producing electrical power on at least one output winding (36a-36c) in response to the prime mover rotating the output shaft and for driving the output shaft in response to operation as a motor; an exciter (102) for applying excitation to a field winding (34) of the main motor generator during operation for producing electrical power on the at least one output winding and for applying current to the field winding of the main motor and generator to produce a magnetic field in the field winding during operation of the main motor generator as a motor; circuitry (122), responsive to current in a field winding (204) of the exciter, for producing an output signal representing a position of the rotor of the main motor generator driven by the output shaft; and a main inverter (114), responsive to the output signal, for commutating application of electrical current to the at least one output winding to control operation of the main motor generator during operation as a motor.

Position and velocity sensorless control for a motor generator system

A detector for detecting rotor position of a brushless generator having a motive power shaft, a permanent magnet generator (PMG) having a set of armature phase windings and a main generator portion having a set of armature phase windings includes a circuit coupled to the armature phase windings of the main generator portion for deriving a number of interval pulses per revolution of the motive power shaft. A circuit measures time periods between adjacent interval pulses and the measured time periods are converted into an indication of the angular position of the motive power shaft in accordance with a parameter of power delivered to the main generator portion armature phase windings.

Position-and-velocity sensorless control for starter generator

A synchronous machine is operable in a starting mode of operation in which a magnitude of a parameter of power applied to a main generator portion armature winding of the synchronous machine is detected relative to a stationary frame of reference and is converted into field and torque producing components relative to a rotating frame of reference. A controllable power source coupled to the main generator portion armature winding is controlled during operation in the starting mode based upon the field and torque producing components.

Method and apparatus for starting a synchronous machine

A detector for detecting rotor position of a brushless generator includes a shaft pulse encoder which develops a cycle pulse once per revolution of a motive power shaft and a circuit coupled to armature phase windings of a permanent magnet generator of the brushless generator for deriving a number of interval pulses per revolution of the motive power shaft. A circuit measures time periods between adjacent interval pulses and the measured time periods are converted into an indication of the angular position of the motive power shaft.

Rotor position detector

A control for operating an electromagnetic machine in a starting mode of operation wherein the main armature winding of the machine receives electrical power from a controllable power source during the starting mode of operation, comprises a circuit for detecting a magnitude of a parameter of power applied to the main armature winding relative to a stationary frame of reference, a position sensor for detecting rotor position of the electromagnetic machine, a converter responsive to angular position indication for converting the detected parameter magnitude into field and torque producing components relative to a rotating frame of reference, and a circuit responsive to the field and torque producing components for controlling the power source during operation in the starting mode. This control includes an igniter for igniting a prime mover. Further, the control is operable during a first phase prior to ignition of the prime mover for causing the electromagnetic machine to provide motive power to the prime mover so as to accelerate the prime mover at a first predetermined rate, is operable during a second phase subsequent to the first phase so as to accelerate the prime mover at a second predetermined rate, is operable during this second phase for providing fuel to the prime mover to facilitate ignition thereof, and is operable during a third phase subsequent to the ignition of the prime mover so as to accelerate the prime mover at a third predetermined rate to a self-sustaining speed.

Engine starting system utilizing multiple controlled acceleration rates

A method of controllably starting a prime mover, such as a gas turbine engine for an aircraft, in which the prime mover is coupled to a synchronous machine operable in a generating mode in which the synchronous machine converts motive power generated by the prime mover into electrical power and in a starting mode in which the synchronous machine provides motive power to the prime mover to accelerate the prime mover to self-sustaining speed includes three controlled phases: a pre-ignition phase, an ignition phase, and a torque augmentation phase. During each phase the prime mover is accelerated at a predetermined rate. When the motive power provided by the synchronous machine falls below a predetermined level, its operation is converted from its starting mode to its generating mode.
