A method of performing impedance measurements on a subject. The method includes using a processing system to determine at least one impedance measurement to be performed, and at one electrode arrangement associated with the determined measurement. A representation of the arrangement is displayed so the impedance measurement can be performed once the electrodes have been arranged in accordance with the displayed representation.

Monitoring system

A method for use in determining fluid levels within a subject, the method including, in a processing device, determining at least one impedance value measured for the subject, determining physical dimensions for at least part of at least one segment of the subject, using the physical dimensions to determine a shape factor at least partially indicative of a shape of the at least one segment and calculating a fluid indicator indicative of the fluid levels in the segment at least in part using the at least one impedance value and the shape factor.

Fluid level determination

A probe for use in performing impedance measurements on a subject. The probe includes a housing for being held by an operator in use, a contact surface for contacting the subject and a connector for connecting the contact surface to a measuring device.

Monitoring system and probe

Impedance analysis can be used to measure calf muscle pump (CMP) function in a patient. This may be done by applying electrical signals via a first set of electrodes, and measuring the impedance via a second set of electrodes. The change in impedance as the patient undergoes calf extension or exercise may be measured, and the change in impedance may then be used to assess CMP function. The change in impedance may be used to determine an indicator indicative of the volume of blood ejected by the CMP.

Blood flow assessment of venous insufficiency

A method of detecting tissue oedema in a subject. The method includes determining a measured impedance for first and second body segments. An index indicative of a ratio of the extra-cellular to intra-cellular fluid is then calculated for each body segment, with these being used to determine an index ratio based on the index for the first and second body segments. The index ration can in turn be used to determine the presence, absence or degree of tissue oedema, for example by comparing the index ratio to a reference or previously determined index ratios.

Oedema detection

A method of determining frequencies for use in performing impedance measurements. The method includes determining estimates for parameter values representing an impedance response for at least one subject, using the estimated parameter values to determine a design and using the design to determine frequencies for use in impedance measurements.

Impedance measurements

A method of detecting tissue oedema in a subject. The method includes determining a measured impedance for first and second body segments. An index indicative of a ratio of the extra-cellular to intra-cellular fluid is then calculated for each body segment, with these being used to determine an index ratio based on the index for the first and second body segments. The index ratio can in turn be used to determine the presence, absence or degree of tissue oedema, for example by comparing the index ratio to a reference or previously determined index ratios.

The present invention provides a method of assessing tissue oedema, in particular lymphoedema, by measuring bioelectrical impedance at a single frequency. Comparison of a single frequency bioelectrical impedance measurement taken at an anatomical region affected by tissue oedema to that taken at an anatomical region unaffected by tissue oedema is a reliable indicator of the presence or possible presence of lymphoedema. The present invention further provides an apparatus for determining the presence of tissue oedema.

Method and device for measuring tissue oedema

A method of determining parameter values used in impedance analysis of a subject. The method includes using a processing system to determine a number of impedance measurements at a corresponding number of frequencies. The impedance measurements are used to determine estimates of parameter values, with the estimates being used to determine theoretical impedance values based on the parameter value estimates. The theoretical impedance values are compared to the measured impedance values to allow a modification direction to be determined for at least one of the parameter value estimates. This is then used to modify at least one parameter value estimate, with the parameter values being determined at least in part from one or more modified parameter value estimates.
